Today I'm joined by Bro. Brent and we talk synergy.
Have you ever been in a rut? I think sometimes we can get stuck doing things a certain way. One argument is that if it’s working, why try to change it? Another dynamic that can happen in a group is when someone presents an alternate point of view, we can become defensive of quote, “our way” and reject outside opinion.
We’re blessed to have a large, rotating staff. And while I have been guilty of quickly rejecting ideas, I do think there’s value in hearing other ideas. We should not just tolerate other perspectives but welcome them. One caveat, just to clarify, we are not talking about compromise and we’re not talking about accepting other ideas regarding doctrine or standards etc. We’re just talking about varying ideas on presentation etc.
Some of the things we try to cover:
- Avoid 'GroupThink'
- Think Outside the Box
- The Goal is more important than the Role
- C.R.O. Chief Reminding Officer
Thank you.
SPEAKER_01Welcome to another episode, the place where we talk about kids ministry and take a peek behind the scenes. We try to share a little bit of what we've learned that works for us and some of our failures so you can avoid them. We release a new episode every Friday, and this is your Backstage Pass to see the magic or disaster that happens behind the scenes of our kids ministry. I'm your host, Gabe Baker, and today I'm joined by Brother Brent. How's it going?
SPEAKER_00Going very well, sir.
SPEAKER_01This one, we didn't have to reschedule a bunch of stuff, right? Right away. Right.
SPEAKER_00Plan and set in one day.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, which is rare, it seems. What are we talking about today?
SPEAKER_00Today's topic is going to be synergy.
SPEAKER_01Synergy. And so we're not talking about sin and we're not talking about energy, but it's closer to energy than it is sin. Yes. Synergy. So have you ever been in a rut? I think sometimes we can get stuck doing things a certain way. I know I can. And so one argument is that if it's working, why try to change it? Another dynamic that can happen in a group is when someone presents an alternate point of view, we can become defensive of, quote, our way and reject outside opinion. So here we're blessed to have a large rotating staff. And while we have been guilty, well, I have been guilty of quickly rejecting ideas, I do think that there's value in hearing other ideas. So, and then also we should not just tolerate other perspectives, but welcome them. So one caveat, just to clarify, we're not talking about compromise on anything. And we're also, we're not talking about accepting other ideas regarding doctrine or standards, et cetera. We're talking about varying ideas on the presentation of what we do in Sunday school, you know, that
SPEAKER_00kind of thing. Okay. So synergy, I guess, yeah, like you said, we have a revolving door, so to speak, Yeah, so
SPEAKER_01we always kind of have somebody quote unquote new. I mean, they might not be new to Sunday school, but it's different every week. We have about 30 staff that we rotate through and we have 10 on any given Sunday.
SPEAKER_00Right. And it's one of those ones where when we have so many people, it's like you're not doing the same. I mean, we do have some people that do some of the same segments every
SPEAKER_01time. Brother Arter tends to always do outside welcome. You're welcome. Yeah. He's just, he's steady Eddie and we just put him there and we probably should rotate that a little bit more. Right. Yeah. He always, we just stick him out there and make him do it.
SPEAKER_00There's other reasons too. Some of them is because we have people that are still doing music. Yeah. During the time of dismissal. So we have some staff running up to get ready. Right. Other people that are down there greeting the kids and then the rest running through in the midst of all that to get upstairs, to get ready. So it's
SPEAKER_01hard
SPEAKER_00to sometimes just to always switch people, different people in and out. And some people are... or I say better at certain aspects of this. Oh, yeah,
SPEAKER_01definitely better at different things. Yeah, people have their strengths and weaknesses, right? Yeah, so I guess, you know, one of the reasons I wanted to talk about this is, so synergy in my mind, and I suppose we could look it up, but in my mind, synergy is kind of like teamwork or working together. It could be, you know, synergistic parts of a machine or whatever. Right. So it's complementary And so. Right. Yep. Work with
SPEAKER_00me. what are we going to do for this? Hey, what are we getting for this? And we got up there and for the most part, we just, we, we winged it and it went fairly good. Like it was, I mean, for the most part, like, I mean, again, hard to capture kids attention for a half hour, 45 minutes, however long we were up here, but that first 20 minutes or so, most of the kids, like, I don't think, I don't know if I've noticed them that attentive to what we were doing. Yeah, it was, it was, they were, they were homed in on, on everything we were doing. And what's
SPEAKER_01key with that is, and we're, we're usually up here an hour, but what's, what's key with that too is that the theme so it's it's like a news theme and you know I kind of almost think that for kids it's not as interesting as it is for adults right but because there's no sword fights happening we're not always doing a backflip or anything and and it wasn't we will have some interactivity but it wasn't really interactive our Sunday school that's one of the I guess kind of unique things about our Sunday schools we people the kids get out of their seats and often you're going to another room yes and And so but none of that was happening this time. Right. But yet they were still engaged.
SPEAKER_00They were. Yeah, it was it was fun because, yeah, it was like and again, we always say this, but it's a lot of fun for us, the adult actors. Yeah. To do this. And but then to see them actually like they're just focusing on like, OK, where are we? What is going on exactly? So we had, you know, our news, our Gary up there and, you know, interviewing the three different.
SPEAKER_01Oh, Plan of Salvation.
SPEAKER_00The experts. The experts. Exactly. Exactly. brought in uh you know experts in their field and so we had uh we just again on the spot uh professor barry baptism we
SPEAKER_01just talked about him on a podcast
SPEAKER_00yeah so it was like all right and again and then at the end off the cuff um we had um i would say it was kind of a someone from the uk an english accent brother matthew did english accent very sophisticated in talking about the holy ghost
SPEAKER_01he said he said that he uh what did he say he said i think he He just kind of randomly did the English accent. I think so, yeah. And then he went out to do something else. I don't remember what it was. And he said that he had a hard time shaking the English accent.
SPEAKER_00I think he told me that. Yeah, yeah. That's good. But again, it was just, it was off the cuff. And we just, yeah, we just went with it and kind of, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Well, I'll tell you a little secret is, so, you know, I was up here really late working on the theme, the decor part of it. And so, I kind of leaned on you guys because I knew who was scheduled. Right. And I was like, oh, yeah, we got to do this, you know, and most of our Sunday school is that way. But there's times when I'm like, oh, OK, well, this is we're going to script this a little more detail.
SPEAKER_00Just because there's some people that really rely heavily on the script. Yeah. To speak. Yeah. More so. Yeah. You know, though, it's not not necessarily a bad thing again. It's but when they're just, you know, more or less reading through this is the story and not filling in or maybe making it a little more fun or interactive and things like that. Again, that That's where that synergy maybe kind of fills those voids when you can get up there. I think it was me, Brother Matthew, Brother Aaron. Was it Brother Aaron or was it Brennan up there with me? I can't remember now. For the... For the plan of salvation. Well, Brother Keech. Brother Keech, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I think it was Brennan. I think it was... Oh, you know what? We have a casting sheet right there. It's kind of hard to see from
SPEAKER_00that far. I think it was Brennan, but I'm not 100% sure. Either way, though, we were all just really, like, again, unscripted on, like, yes, we do the plan of salvation every week, you know, and generally we have kind of a someone go out single person go out there with we've got this a map an old map yeah which
SPEAKER_01worked well for the pirate theme
SPEAKER_00right yeah um but so to go out there and completely again it's not completely different we're still talking about the point of salvation the
SPEAKER_01content is the same it's the presentation
SPEAKER_00is presentation exactly we did not plan any of that like we didn't have any names for yeah for these people it was just like we're backstage getting ready and and john comes out with a crazy wig on it's like he's he's talking about being a professor or uh
SPEAKER_02yeah
SPEAKER_00the the science Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I want to, I think like if we could train more of that, you know, I have a note here that says groupthink. And if we're not careful, we can stifle our creativity by always being around those like-minded people. Right. And so I, and I've been guilty of this before is like, if they're not like me or this group, I can kind of quickly reject, you know, an idea or something. But I think we should, you know, be careful that we're not in this groupthink, so to speak, because Because there's sometimes like, you know, even you are new-er. We got to stop saying that because you've been in the war a while
SPEAKER_00now. It's been a while now, but it's still new. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But like you came in, you brought some great ideas. You know, Brennan, and now he's been in forever.
SPEAKER_00He's a veteran. I think he was born into this. He came out of Sunday school and immediately started. Yeah, immediately
SPEAKER_01started. Yeah. But he had an idea with the offering that like, and I think Brother Keith was part of offering too. And Brennan's like, I'll do this. Yeah. He took this Febreze and put Shout on it. Oh, that's right. Yeah. Yeah. Which we did just talk about this on the podcast. I don't want to rehash it. But he did that. And Brother Keith is like, oh, I don't. He didn't really. He wasn't. He's like, who wants to get sprayed with Febreze? But he's like, OK, whatever. You know, fine. I'll
SPEAKER_00roll with it. Let's see what happens. OK.
SPEAKER_01And so that's an example. Not quite the example I'm thinking of. I'm more like thinking of new people. But that's an example of like, OK, well, let's just we'll try it. We'll roll with it. And it worked. It ended up working out really, really well. Yeah. And so I think that, you know, a lot of times there's actually a greater value even because we're all doing something one way and then somebody comes in and is like, hey, what about this? And they, they're not part of the group and not part of the group thing. They haven't, they don't see how we've been doing it for years. So sometimes they have some great ideas,
SPEAKER_00you know, it's like, oh, okay. Yeah. Let's give it a shot. I mean, what's the worst that could happen then? Yeah, no, it's funny because yeah, I had my niece ask me, what was actually, what were you guys actually spraying. I was like, it was actually Febreze. It was actually Febreze. Somebody said it was cologne. I was like, no, it was literally
SPEAKER_01just Febreze. Yeah, that's funny. But yeah, so it, and that gives us, and I had another note, outside the box. The outside box, yeah. And that just, that gives us the opportunity to do that with
SPEAKER_00more people, you know. Yeah, we, again, we can get stuck in our ways, I guess, in some sense. Right. We have our segments, our, you know, our prayer offering, plan of salvation story, praise song. And at the yeah we mix it up and we'll do you know because the kids eventually kind of catch on oh what's after praise yeah here we go yeah what's after perfect and you know all that stuff um and that's
SPEAKER_01the rut we don't want
SPEAKER_00exactly we don't want to get into that because then the again ours is not very typically very dry or boring the kids don't sit there and go oh here we go yeah just praise no no i don't i don't think we necessarily see that but uh i'm still keeping it new fresh
SPEAKER_01fresh and keeping them on their toes and like what's yeah and like we've talked about this before as i've talked about you know if we could have each segment just be so incredible that they're getting whiplash by just looking and like, what's happening now? What's happening now? Yeah. And I think that some of the ways we can elevate our Sunday school and our segments is by some of the stuff that we're talking about is, you know, including some of those that, you know, might think differently or, you know, there's this, I thought of this when I wrote this topic down, you know, I work for the state. And so there's this thing going around the DEI to Diversity, equity, and inclusion. Okay. And so this
SPEAKER_00is... I haven't heard this.
SPEAKER_01Okay. So this is a... It drives me nuts, really. So it's all about race and orientation, all that garbage. It's a political thing. And it's being pushed hard. It's being pushed really hard. And so I don't want... We're not talking about that at all. So just to make that clear, we are not talking about that at all. But To have some diversity in your Sunday school. And when I'm talking about that, I mean, we're, yeah, all races, all that, you know, but what we're talking about really is like, you know, we have old and we have young. Right. We have men, we have women, different backgrounds, different styles and ideas. And so I think that's valuable, you know, to have those different perspectives.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely. Yeah. And again, you know, I'm sure there's a saying similar to, you You know, no idea is a bad idea. You know, there's something like that out there. I'm pretty sure. I have it on the notes right there. No
SPEAKER_01idea is a
SPEAKER_00bad idea. I didn't even notice that. But, you know, it's true. Like, yeah, there's going to be ideas and it's like, that's no, that's not, we can't do that. You know, there's maybe for just various reasons, like, yeah, that's just not suitable for our Sunday school class for this, whatever. And there's ones probably that are just like, no, not doing that. Not doing that at all. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But I think that, you know, and I have mentioned this a few times, so like brainstorming sessions, for example, that's where you often will say that phrase, you know, like, hey, look, no ideas are bad. And I think that the safety in that environment is to let people know there's a temptation to think that if your idea is not accepted or if your idea is a, quote, bad idea, that you are a bad person. Right. It's not a character flaw. And that's something that we got to remember is that I put a note, the goal is more important than the role. If you can remember in like a brainstorming situation or an ideas session, if you can remember that, hey, the best idea wins. It's about the goal that we're trying to do here. And we're not attacking, we should be attacking ideas. You know, Seth Godin talks about thrashing. And so you should be thrashing early. You should be thrashing the ideas to see if they hold up. Right. But when we're doing that, remember, we're not attacking the person. And so if your idea is getting attacked and it's like, well, what about this? And I mean, I'm guilty of it too, but it can be tempting to have hurt feelings or, you know, something like, well, you guys are just, you know, stomping on my idea, you know, but really that's the way you find out, you know, if it's a good idea or if there's better ideas, you know, the best idea wins.
SPEAKER_00Right. That's true. Yeah. No bad idea. That's, you know, again, if you can't, one, if you're not given any ideas out there, well, we got nothing to work with. I mean, if no one starts coming forward, like, well, what about this? What about this? It's just one person with one, you know, again, we're a team. We have a goal, an end goal in place.
SPEAKER_01Trying,
SPEAKER_00yeah, trying to get somewhere. You know, so for one person to just do constantly have, it's just their idea and their idea and no one else having any input or even, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Then it's like the group thing. It's just one vein.
SPEAKER_00Yep. And it's, yeah. Well.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And sometimes when you you receive an idea that is not ideal, you know, or something we can use, sometimes it spawns other ideas. Right. You know, that we can't.
SPEAKER_00Like, oh yeah, well, we can't do that, but we can maybe, maybe we can do it something similar or, well, let's take this out of that, but put this in place of what you're thinking. And yeah, absolutely. I think it's probably actually, you know, there's probably a lot of times we've seen where, you know, well, this idea is not going to work out or we can't do this, but if we do this way or do something similar. Yeah. Like,
SPEAKER_01oh, that gives me an idea. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00You know, more ideas on the table and then people start, you know, it just creates more, more thinking, more. Yeah, exactly. Imagination. More outside of the box. Yes, exactly. More outside the box. The more you keep talking about it, bringing stuff up, bringing people in. Yeah. You're going to open up more doors. The box is going to open up. The sides are going to fall off and you're just going to have wide open. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Even talking about it makes me like really want to do a brainstorm
SPEAKER_00session with her. And we've talked about that a while ago, I think. Yeah. We got to sit down with a bunch of people. We used to do it
SPEAKER_01every year and we haven't done it for a couple of years. So we definitely, we've got to do it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So maybe one Saturday night or something just. Yeah. Get
SPEAKER_01together
SPEAKER_00and. Even if it's just a few people one week and then the next week it's, you know, 10 people and the next week it's four people, you know, or maybe not even on a weekly basis, but just, you know, once a month or something just to.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Just to throw those ideas
SPEAKER_00out there. It does. I think it does open up a lot and like, oh man, I've never thought about it that way or hey. So I think
SPEAKER_01I might've told you this before, but I don't think I mentioned on the podcast so years ago there was two other guys that used to be in our Sunday school and we would meet so we used to do practice at 8 o'clock in the morning so now we do it at 8.30 we used to have an hour and so we would actually meet at 7.30 in the morning on Sundays I
SPEAKER_00think I remember you talking about this and we would
SPEAKER_01basically do this every Sunday for a while we would go through and brainstorm stuff and look at the next week's script and come up with ideas and everything and then So we're there at 730 and then eight o'clock rolls around. Here we go. We're practicing with the whole team. Yeah,
SPEAKER_00it does. It opens up the creativity. I think you text me a while back when we were discussing this, this theme with the, you know, the good news and the fake news type situation. And someone had, I think it was on one of your Sunday school.
SPEAKER_01Brother, let's call him out. Brother James. Oh boy, I got to get his last name right. Pelletier or yeah, I think it's Pelletier. Brother, forgive me if I got it wrong. Brother James. He's on the group and yeah, he came up with a good idea.
SPEAKER_00I was like, wow, that works. Boom. Perfect. And again, it's like now you could use that in a lot of different stories in the Bible. Yeah. Yeah. Or situations. And it's like, huh. Okay. You know, you know, we've talking about the character in the past episodes and things like that. And it's just, it was like, oh, yeah, it's really good. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And the idea he presented, um, we're going to, we're going to keep it secret for now. And so, um, but we're We're going to credit him. We'll talk about it again when we do it. So we're going to definitely use that idea. Once we get closer. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Stay tuned.
SPEAKER_01Stay tuned for breaking news.
SPEAKER_00Breaking news. That's right.
SPEAKER_01So, okay, one more note before we wrap up here. I have CRO. As a Sunday School leader, we are the CRO. So it's like CEO, you know, but we're the CRO, the Chief Reminding Officer. And so what I kind of put a long note here. I normally don't have this long. of a note, but I have, as Sunday school leaders, we must constantly remind our staff of our mission. If people have a strong understanding of the vision and mission, then they may come up with their own great ideas on how to accomplish it. And so where that whole, that long explanation comes from is I feel like in the training, we can train people how to do, we can even train ad-lib to a an offering segment and make it cool and even present some ideas and how to think about it. But the more that people actually understand and while that jet is loud, the more that people understand and know the mission of what we're trying to do, the vision, where we're going, I think that the more that that's like seeped into your Sunday school staff, then they can on their own come up with some great ideas on how to present it because they understand understand the goal right and if we could keep reminding that because i think it can be easy to get off track by looking at the method right you know so i'll just we use we we use the doctors as an example all the time but i'll just use them again the doctors are silly they're hilarious they're funny and we usually use or often i should say we use them as simply a comic relief right but we've also had the doctors do like the skit we've done it a couple times where you they're doing surgery and putting somebody hiding the word of God in somebody's heart taking out all the taking out all the junk all the junk yeah and so and so that's a skit I think you know probably a lot of people have done that and but our doctors are so crazy that if they didn't understand the mission or vision really well they could get off track on just the method
SPEAKER_02right
SPEAKER_01but our guys and it's often brother Keech and brother Aaron Boggs our guys are so good that they are funny hilarious I mean they're pulling out a, you know, old telephone or whatever, you know, I mean, just crazy stuff, but yet they're getting the lesson in there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. You know, they're, they're still, still managed to get that in there at the end. Yeah. I agree. Um, it's, uh, you know, I keep thinking about last, last week was, it was just a good week. I thought Sunday school wise, you know, I forget which, which who was at the tail end of plan of salvation, but I was asking people how many, who's been baptized and then who wants to be baptized. And, you know, you see a bunch of hands go up and it's like, that's right. Yeah. They need to be baptized. And I mean, we have a, our pastor has An age, yeah. An age and a counseling.
SPEAKER_01something I heard him talk about, but he has some things about baptizing kids and some certain policies. I can't remember exactly what it is. And we have, each church is going to have their own policy, what their pastor wants. So we have some policies in place, but I think more important, that gets back to the means and methods, right? Yes. More importantly, we want the kids to want to be baptized. We want them to have the desire to receive the Holy Ghost. We want them to have that
SPEAKER_00desire. Exactly. And it just kind of goes to that, our mission. Like, what are we here for? Yeah, we're having fun. We're, you know, doing goofy skits and stuff. But bottom, at the end of the day, our mission is to obviously save, have the kids in our church that are, you know, born in the church, get the Holy Ghost, baptized, but also reaching these bus kids. Right.
SPEAKER_01Reaching out and... That's the goal. That's what we need. The two missions of our church is evangelism and discipleship. Yeah. You know, of basically, I mean... i know that we can boil we can i mean we can that's boiled down i know we can have a lot of uh missions so to speak but that's in a nutshell for the kingdom of god is evangelize yeah you know witness and bring the people in and then disciple those people
SPEAKER_00and it's you know there's there's a few of our sunday school some of the ones you know i won't say names but uh a few of the girls that have been coming for a while like since i just when i started sunday school and it's like they got the holy ghost they got baptized and now they are they're here every service they go to our school. And it's like, these are bus kids, you know? And it's like, every time I see them, it's like, that's awesome. That is awesome. You would never know. Yeah. You would never know. It's like, you know, who are they? They're full on. They were bus kids that I think one of them was from a very young age. I don't know if both of them, but I know for sure one was, I think has been coming on the bus and maybe even her mom at one point was a bus kid way, way back. I can't remember. I thought I heard that, but I can't remember for certain. But, you know, again, they've been coming around on the bus forever and forever. And now, you know, They're about, you know, in their kind of their last year of Sunday school before they turn 12. And then they'll
SPEAKER_01be a part of the youth.
SPEAKER_00And then they'll be part of youth. And yeah, they're, you know, they're here. Yeah, it's so cool to see that. It is. It's so cool to see. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I was thinking, and this is not Sunday school, but I was thinking of a young man that's in our church. And I was, I was just, he came over and I was just like, man, I remember when he first came. Like long, long earrings, these earrings that dangled down and crazy haircuts. And just, yeah,
SPEAKER_00it's like, wow. If it's the person I'm thinking of the first time I saw him, it was like, what do we have here? Like, this is, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Now, I mean, just total change.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Total. Absolutely. I mean, it happened barely. Fairly quick. And he's been
SPEAKER_01here for a while now.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I think it was a year last. About a year, maybe. Year and a half. It was right after August services. Okay. His sister, sister brought him.
SPEAKER_01I think so. Yeah. I think
SPEAKER_00so. It's only been a year and a half, really.
SPEAKER_01It's crazy to think
SPEAKER_00about. I want to say 2022. Oh, really? Late summer 2022. Okay. A year and a half. In that September, September, October. Wow. Because I was standing outside talking with the front of our church, talking with someone and came walking and it was like, yeah, long hair, these long earrings, cross earrings. And it was just like,
SPEAKER_01hey, how's it going?
SPEAKER_00You know what I mean? But it was like.
SPEAKER_01It's so cool now. He looks like a Pentecostal young man or he is a Pentecostal
SPEAKER_00young man, you know? You wouldn't know. You wouldn't know unless you knew him at the beginning, right? Like it's. Yeah. And there's so cool.
SPEAKER_01There's so many like that. And we want it to be more and more and more.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And to think, I mean, again, I think that was right after she got the Holy Ghost, if I'm not mistaken, his sister.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I think so. Yeah. Because I remember she was super excited that, like, when he first
SPEAKER_00had him pray. Yeah. And now, if I'm not mistaken, two more of their family, younger brother, younger
SPEAKER_01sister. Maybe.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Are coming. I think so. And so the mom actually came in Sunday night looking for someone because her younger kids, the two youngest ones, wanted to stay for even Oh, okay. And that one person just starts bringing in this person, this person, this person, five people here, you know, and it's like, it's kind of cool to see that in our own church, in our own ministry where it's like, wow. Yeah. You never know which one, which one it's going to be. You win one and that one could bring in a hundred, you know, you don't know. So it's, yeah, a lot of fun.
SPEAKER_01All right. Well, to recap here. So just group think, be careful not to stifle creativity by just only being around like-minded people. I mean, you know, You know, and when I say that, again, I don't want to be misunderstood. Like-minded people, you know, like faith, you know, apostolics, yes, but just have some diverse opinions and different backgrounds. It's helpful. And that leads to kind of the bullet, too, is outside-the-box thinking. If you can expand that group of people and expand those resources and influences, you know, it leads to some of that outside. What was I? I saw something one time, or somebody told me, thinking outside the bun. I think it was Taco Bell or something. I think outside the bun. And then the goal is more important than the role.
