We should always be looking to better ourselves and to make our team better.
Every year I go to the Children’s Ministry Conference in Redlands, CA and I bring some of our team. This is an awesome 2-day conference, and the teachers are great.
We’ve been talking about starting an in-house training and the time is upon us. I have a general outlook and even some specific topics that I want our staff to be trained in, but I don’t want to be living in a vacuum. So today we’re going to discuss some ideas for training topics.
A few things we try to cover:
- Why do we need training?
- Training Topics brainstorm
- Facilitating (crowd control
- Acting
- Action Songs
- Teaching
- A/V (audio/visual)
- Puppets
- Outreach
- Bus Ministry
- Scripting
- Infrastructure (building sets, decor, cleanup etc.)
- Scheduling
Thank you.
SPEAKER_00Welcome to another episode, the place where we talk about kids' ministry and take a peek behind the scenes. We try to share a little bit of what we've learned that works for us and some of our failures so you can avoid them. We release a new episode every Friday, and this is your Backstage Pass to see the magic or disaster that happens behind the scenes of our kids' ministry. I'm your host, Gabe Baker, and today I'm joined by Brother Bren. How's it going? Hey, it's going all right, going all right. I was getting ready to do my burning hair. Yeah, there you go. All right. Well, what are we talking about today? All right. Today's topic is training ideas. Training ideas. So we should always be looking to better ourselves and make our team better. Every year I go to the Children's Ministry Conference in Redlands, California and bring some of our team. This is an awesome two-day conference and the teachers are great. So this is just to put a plug in for it. It's if you go to Apostolic Sunday School, apostolicsundayschool.com It should be on there somewhere. Also, there's the Southern California Commission. If you Google them, you should find it. But it's a training end of April. And if you're serious about Sunday school, you should try to go to it. So anyway, here we've been talking about starting an in-house training. And now the time is finally upon us. So I have a general outlook and I even have some specific topics that I want our staff to be trained in. But I don't want to be living in a vacuum. So I did discuss some schedule ideas with Pastor on like what would be the best way to present it and think I got some good direction for that. But I wanted to get some more input and just ideas in general. So today we're going to discuss some ideas for the training topics.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, man, you know that that conference is pretty awesome. I think my favorite part about the conference is definitely got to be Brother Hodge doing all this Sunday school songs, the kids songs. Oh, yes. Yes. Seeing him dance around and be out of breath and trying to sing and dance and show everybody how to do the motions. Yeah. But it's a blast. Definitely my favorite highlight
SPEAKER_00portion. Yeah. Well, and he's so awesome. I mean, he does the songs and just, I mean, everything he does is top notch. He's so good. Oh, yeah. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_02And he's definitely got, Brother Booker was talking about, he was wondering where his gift was. And Brother Hodge heard GIF. And so, he started doing GIF motions. Oh, the GIF. Yeah. Yeah. There we go. I was trying to think of the right word.
SPEAKER_00I
SPEAKER_02couldn't think of
SPEAKER_00it. Yeah. Yeah. And you get brother Hodge and brother Booker together and oh man, it's, it's awesome. You're, you're not going to be bored at all for sure.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely. A blast to see.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And there's a lot of, I mean, every year there's great teachers at that conference. I mean, there's some just top notch, you know, Sunday school leaders, brother Booker's always there. Yeah. It's just, it's so good. Yeah, absolutely. I, I look forward to it every year. Yeah. I think I've been twice. Yeah. So I'll be going for sure again this year and try to bring some of our team again. It's always a fun time. Yeah. Yeah. It's in April, right? April. Yeah. It's like the last weekend of April and it's a Friday, Saturday deal. And so we, we usually, well, last year I think we flew down, we flew down Thursday, didn't we? Yeah. Yeah. We flew down one day early. So we might do that. Again, I don't know, but we were back here, you know, for Sunday church back at home where we fly out Saturday night usually. So it's really fun. But yeah, so in-house training. So I just, I wrote some, just a few notes right before we started recording here. One of the things is I put, why do we need training? And I think, you know, maybe at face value, it's just really obvious. We just need training. We need to better ourselves. But one of the things that I was going to mention is that I've mentioned this before is sometimes I find myself like with newer people, I can get a little bit frustrated and I try not to let it show, but I can get a little frustrated because they're not doing their quote job. But then I, if I think about it, I'm like, wait, how would they even know? They don't even know what to do. They don't know that that's their job.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. They just show up and they're trying to do their best, but yeah, they don't know exactly, you know, that they should be right on top of the kids, you know, like helping them interact and stuff. You know, maybe they're just standing there waiting to be told what to do.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, exactly. typically happens well and there's different you know we have some pretty young people in that they i think they're going to be great and they want to they want to do but they just don't they haven't been you know they don't work and so they they're just not around it and then there's other people like you know i referenced brother brent a couple times but brother brent he's not been in real long a couple years now um but i mean he like he fit right in right away he's got that personality too that just yeah he's got a good personality and then and And the other thing is like he, now I think he could benefit from some of the training too, but he like is looking for what needs to be done and filling in the gaps. Like, oh, there's some dead air here. Let me fill this, you know, I mean, he just, you know, makes an effort, I guess.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And yeah, kids, like you said, that don't have a job and haven't worked yet.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02They haven't been taught that yet. You know, they should be looking to see, you know, what needs to be done. Right. Uh, How can I help? That kind of thing. Yeah, they don't know what
SPEAKER_00to do. You know, you, Brother Keech, Brother Aaron, there's several others, are so used to back-to-back stuff that you guys are ready. And so when you have that downtime, you guys are back here munching on the snacks or whatever and looking at the screen just knowing like, okay, my part's coming up. Yeah, trying to think of ideas too. Yeah, trying to think of ideas to further whatever we did in practice or not, whatever. Which, you know...
SPEAKER_02those ideas don't always pan out okay like the one where i was like oh i'm gonna surprise brother arthur he's the king oh yes oh yeah tell that
SPEAKER_00story that was so funny
SPEAKER_02yeah yeah so i'm back here right and uh i'm trying to think of what i can do to kind of add some flair uh no pun intended yeah um and he was pharaoh right yeah he was pharaoh and i was uh i think i was the cup bearer and so i told him i was like do not drink this like i because i wanted to surprise him too because he hadn't seen me do the the fire breathing and so i put some alcohol in the not like uh not beer yeah not beer the flammable alcohol i guess rubbing alcohol i don't i don't know exactly what kind it is but i put some in the cup and uh you know it it's kerosene basically oh yeah uh it's just like a more purified kerosene or something still aren't supposed to put it in your mouth well i told him don't drink this like You know, I'm going to, you know, do something cool. So, I give it to him and he's thinking, oh, you know, I've drank a nasty stuff before. I could just, I'll do it for the kids. He's like, I'm committed. Yeah. So, he takes a sip and just spits it out. He's like, what? And in the meantime, I have some already kind of in my mouth and I had a slight cough. So, I accidentally swallow some. Oh, no. Oh, man. And then, you know, I do the fire breathing to where I have the light. And I spit it out and I light it as it's being spit out. Yeah, which is a super cool effect. It looks super cool. And everyone can feel the heat and everything. It's a nice big fireball. Yeah. But man, I swallowed some of that kerosene and I was just dying. I was coughing in the back. And then I tried to go back out there. I think I missed my one part because I was in the back about to throw up. It was just, that was not one of my best ideas to improvise. It
SPEAKER_00left
SPEAKER_02burn marks all on his chest here where it drooled out of his mouth. It was so bad. Oh, man.
SPEAKER_00I'm glad you told that story because we haven't done the disaster part. In the opening, I always mention the magic or disaster. Oh, yeah. This is definitely one of the disaster moments. It was a both. We had the magic of the fire and the
SPEAKER_02disaster as well. And Brother Bricker talks about that in his object lessons, which is where I got the idea from doing, you know, the swallowing the fire and then breathing the fire and all that. Oh, yeah. He talks about, you know, make sure you practice because you can go wrong. Yeah. Well, I've done it a lot. So I was like, I don't really, you know, I could just wing this. Yeah. Even if you do it a lot, you can still mess up. And you should probably just let the staff know what's going on so they don't swallow kerosene. Yeah. Oh,
SPEAKER_00man. That was a bad deal. Yeah, that's true. We should probably, you know, we've talked before about being on the same page. Well, we probably, that's one of those things where it would be good to be on the same page. Yeah, I
SPEAKER_02should not have tried to surprise him.
SPEAKER_00That's funny. Oh, man.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so I don't remember what we were talking about. Something Training, training. Training, yeah. So, yeah, that's kind of going back to why we need training, I guess. Oh, that's what we were talking about, working on the ad lib back here, and sometimes it doesn't always go so great. So, that's where we got there. Yeah, back on track. Okay. Yeah, so anyway, you guys could be back here and be ready. And the thing is, what I was going to mention, too, is because you guys are so used to the old way when it was back-to-back or, you know, or pretty close to it, is even if you miss your cue when you should have gone, if you guys scramble and get out there, you guys have the experience and you're going to make it work and make it happen. Some of our newer ones, even when I say newer, I'm even talking three years because it's such a drastic culture change because we've had this backstage for, I think, three years now. That's
SPEAKER_02incredible.
SPEAKER_00It does not feel that long at all. So, I think some of these younger people that you know aren't used to that other thing they the other style they they see the experienced ones like grabbing a snack and sitting down and so like oh this is what we do oh yeah and then they just totally don't realize well yeah these guys are prepared though they know what they're going to do and so then they get out there the worst case you know they get out there on stage and they just don't know what to say they don't their mic is not even being used because they just don't know what to do so
SPEAKER_02yeah yeah definitely Definitely teaching them, you know, because we have a lot of people too in
SPEAKER_00Sunday school. fast paced you know between segments and all that but the downside is the less staff I mean obviously we have to have a minimal staff in here because we're taking people out of church but the downside of having too small of a staff is with 30 is that some people are just like never hardly ever in and so they can lose interest or whatever you know so yeah so we probably won't do the you know seven or eight staff and Right now, it's probably not feasible anyway because our Sunday school is growing, the amount of kids we have.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we have a lot of kids, especially with the bus and everything. And it adds up. Yeah, which is a good thing.
SPEAKER_00Okay, so with the training, not only is it like, you know, that we just need to teach people how we do this, but the other thing is I feel like with just not a huge amount, but with a little bit of training, I feel like we could up our level of Sunday school. I mean, I think we have a good Sunday. and everything, but I think we could up the level of it. One of the ways, I don't want to get way off track here, but one of the ways and one of the reasons for training in this regard also is, okay, what I envision is imagine like that Sunday, and I know not everybody has the same format of Sunday school that we do, but just to explain, we do ages five through 11 every Sunday and it's acting. It's, you know, like we mentioned, 10 Sunday school staff. We have a We have actors and singers. We have an AV booth. And so we have fully costumed actors doing, usually we have a theme. And so there's a theme story and then there's the Bible story and there's all of our segments. Okay. I don't want to go into all of our scripting. We've done that before, but that's kind of what we do. So imagine that one Sunday, whether it's like Easter or I don't know, just imagine a Sunday that you're wanting everything to be just perfect. You're going to do You're going to have your lights, you're going to have your sound effects, you're going to do special effects like the fire breathing, you know, you're going to do all this stuff and it's going to just be awesome. Same amount of time, you know, roughly an hour, same segments, everything, but you just want it to be a spot on. I want that every Sunday and we have good Sunday school, but that's not what we have right now. You know, we don't have that every Sunday. And so I just, this is like an ongoing dream of mine, I guess, is that each Sunday And we've talked about this before, you and I, but each segment, if you take a dynamic opening, the dynamic opening is about two minutes, two to four minutes, depending on what it is. But let's just say two minutes. And if we focus on dynamic opening as if that was the only thing we were doing that day, like we were just going to throw everything into dynamic opening, like make it incredible. The acting, the sound effects, the lighting, the special effects, every detail. And it still is only going to be two minutes long, but it's going to be just absolutely incredible. Well, imagine if you could do that with every segment.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that'd be, it's, it's, it would be super awesome. And, and that's kind of like, like you said, it's not like that every Sunday. It's like we have the dynamic opening, sorry. And then we have like a memory verse. And then it just kind of is like, you know. Yeah. Yeah. Sometimes it's like, oh. Right. Yeah. What's the memory verse? Because I do that. I'm like, oh my goodness. I didn't memorize the memory
SPEAKER_00verse. Yeah. Yeah. Well, and I do also, I'll take some responsibility because some of that falls back on me with the timing of the script, you know, release. And so, but yeah. And, and I think, and I just use dynamic opening as an example, but yeah, the same thing, like you said, memory verse or memory verse, I think is usually four minutes. But yeah, if, if that four minutes was like broken down to 10 seconds and you're like, this is going to be, this is how we're going to do this. This is your, okay. Then you're going to say this and then I'm going to say this and then the lights are going to be like this. And then the sound effects, going to go, I'm going to knock on this door and you're going to do a knocking sound effect or, you know, I mean, just details that make it awesome.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah. You can definitely add to stuff like that where, you know, just make it so much better.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Like we, um, I've referenced this a lot, but it's, it's just, it's huge for, for us. It's huge, but heart of Christmas, big event. We did our big outreach event and that's kind of how we approach that. You know, it's about an hour and a half program hour and 20 minutes and And every detail, you know, we're looking, I mean, a lot of people, like even Joey and I stuff, they think it's ad lib. It's really not. It's scripted. About 90% of it is scripted, but we practice and we practice and every detail. I mean, we're talking seconds, you know, or points of seconds with some of the lighting cues and. Yeah. With the heart of Christmas and everything. Yeah. And so if we could get that and I don't know, I just, I want to do this. I, this is a goal of mine. I want to get this where we can do it. And like, even if it's just like, okay, one segment at a time. And then finally, okay, this particular Sunday, we're going to do all these segments and they're going to be just awesome. And then slowly work toward, I say slowly because I don't think you can do this overnight, slowly work toward that's every Sunday. Can you imagine? I
SPEAKER_02mean, yeah, that would be incredible. I know we've tried to do it like in our 30, I think we have 30 minutes practice. I like okay you guys remember verse you guys are uh offering try to think of some stuff yeah and it for me it's sometimes it comes to me sometimes it's like nothing yeah sometimes there's nothing there and so i we have you know a whole script uh outline going on you know like 13 weeks right uh from then is what we as staff should do is when we get the script for next week is like i'm gonna remember verse let me think of some ideas yeah and then talk with the other people that Yeah. Yeah. And it is hard. I mean, we
SPEAKER_00do a lot of things, but I like, you know, so like Brother Booker and his team from, I think how I understand it anyway, and I've talked to him quite a bit, but they basically, they do very similar to what we do. They have, I mean, very, very similar. And, but their approach on the scripting, like he handles the scripting and he handles the scripting. the direction for the whole year and you know the yearly outline and all of that but they do so like the segments like we do so they might have dynamic opening I think they call it creative intro so they have creative intro and they have so and so is responsible for that and they know a week or what how far ahead of time I don't know how far ahead it is but they and so it's up to them to actually put it together and everything and so we kind of have we lean a little bit little more where it's on me as a script writer but i'd like to kind of move that way a little bit now um we have done it where we like in a transition where we had people in charge of segments or whatever and that was interesting it kind of worked and kind of didn't you know but i don't know if you remember that but we had basically it was like during a transition so it's only like five weeks but we had where people were in charge of like okay you're in charge of memory verse like coming up with the memory verse and everything i
SPEAKER_02feel like i vaguely remember it but i could be me just wanting to remember
SPEAKER_00yeah so we we have done kind of a version of that and it would probably take a little bit more off of me um so i'd like to lean that way but with that yeah we have to be committed you know to like during the week you know be working toward and then i practice everything you know be able to mesh it all together
SPEAKER_02yeah as long as people are really dedicated i think that could work really well to where like you know if If I'm in charge of the memory verse, you know, I know the topic, so I know what kind of verse I should be looking for. Then also an act to go with the memory verse. Right, yeah, how to present. Yeah, and then also teaching the kids the memory verse and stuff. And then correlating with the other people in memory verse, like I previously mentioned. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Okay, well, we have like just spent a bunch of time on why we need training. So let's get into a few, just some training topics. And so I'm going to just read. them all off and then let's just hit a few of them because we're getting close to our time let's see are we okay okay so here's a few of the training topics I just wrote kind of last minute but facilitating which is for us that's like the crowd control or you know bathroom breaks that kind of thing acting action songs which could include singing and then just like the motions because some people don't sing teaching AV audio audio visual puppets which we don't do very much of But this is one of the things I'm wanting to bring up in the training. Outreach, bus ministry. I have scripting with a question mark. That's kind of like what we were just talking about, you know. And then infrastructure, like building the sets, the decor, the cleanup, et cetera.
SPEAKER_02Man, we can go over all these for a long time. Yeah. Let's see. There's a few that stuck out to me just because the AV, I wanted to do that. Oh,
SPEAKER_00yeah. You mentioned
SPEAKER_02that. Yeah. I want to get it. on my computer and everything, but I, it just seems super, you know, kind of goes along with, with the person, you know, I mentioned, you know, quote unquote, I'm doing the memory versus week, but to be able to, uh, kind of note down sounds that would sound good with that and then give them to the AV person to where they can add a man. And then they also think, what can I add in right here to make it cooler? I don't know. Uh, AV just sounds like it'd be a lot of fun to do sound effects and all that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well, and it is cool. And you know, I'm glad you brought that up because the other thing is even if you weren't to go as far as having the software on your own computer and and doing all that work finding the sound effects i think that would be awesome but even just having an understanding of it helps i think to come up with those ideas because if you know kind of a little bit of how it works it just makes you a little bit more cognizant of what can be done yeah you know like right now you know that oh well i think They can throw a sound effect and a track in there, but you don't know exactly how it works and all the things about soft fades and crossfades and how to do this or repeats. And so if you had a little bit of an understanding of that, it would make you think about it more and also just like, oh, let's use this. Let's maximize this.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. The second one that stuck out to me is bus ministry. I unfortunately can't do bus ministry because I'm in i haven't praised so i have another practice another two practices after after school practice so uh but something that i've always thought would be super cool is going out in character yes either on the bus or i think we've talked about this towards like maybe we're on the street corner and the bus drives past and we're like doing some kind of acting and the kids are all like whoa and then we get a car and run down the swap costumes real quick and
SPEAKER_00yeah i really i really want to do that i think that would be so cool yeah to have like it'd be a theme character like one from our theme like
SPEAKER_02we saw captain patch you know in the corner almost like a where's waldo yeah yeah yeah they're out there and then you know and then also just interacting with the kids too on the bus yeah sure it'll make them a whole lot more excited rather than feeling like they're getting picked up to go to school yeah you know there's the bus driver
SPEAKER_00that's like with uh brother booker you know we're always always bringing brother booker he's so he's so awesome they're Sunday school team is really good but they on their bus and I haven't got to ride it yet I haven't got to stay over and be with them on Sunday I want to do that but from what I understand so they run several buses and they're they make the bus ride just awesome you know and I remember I don't remember who it might have been brother Ryan Greg I can't remember who it was but they talked about that about make you know your Sunday school needs to be awesome but make the bus ride so cool. The kids want to come just for that. And then, you know, it kind of goes back to making each segment awesome. Like I was talking about, if you, if kids come on the bus and it's just, it's so exciting to be on the bus and they got off the bus and they go to Sunday school and it's just so exciting to be in Sunday school. And then the bus ride home too, you know, let's not forget about that. The bus ride home is awesome. What would be cool too
SPEAKER_02is have the bus, the interior, of course, set up, you know, like the theme, whatever the theme is. So a spaceship, maybe have, you know. Oh yeah. And this would be a lot of work. So we'd probably need a whole nother team to help, you know, work with that. But like have the lights, you know, beaming across the ceiling or if it's, you know, yeah, just, just random stuff like that, you know, I think that would be super cool.
SPEAKER_00I do
SPEAKER_02too.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And I, like you said, it is a lot of work, but we have enough people and it would be a place for people to get plugged in, you know, and get involved. Like, you know, we have many people that wear a lot of hats doing so many different things, but if we could have some people who are like, All they do is they clean up after Sunday school and, and they, maybe they ride the bus in the morning, you know, or just whatever. I don't know. I'm just throwing out ideas, but yeah. Yeah. So let's talk about puppets really quick. I was just looking at that. Yeah. So
SPEAKER_02I didn't want to be there.
SPEAKER_00I didn't want to keep interjecting like, all
SPEAKER_01right.
SPEAKER_00So puppets, um, we have not done a puppet show in a while. Um, and, and what we have done, I don't know, for a few years now is we've We do it in our August, our big August thing. We do a puppet show. But then in our regular Sunday school, we haven't done puppets in a few
SPEAKER_02years. I remember we used to do them when I was nine, ten. Man, we had a whole setup. We had a whole theme. A whole, yeah. And it was like, it was actually kind of like how we do Sunday school now, how there's a theme, an ongoing theme. We did that with Sunday school. This is back before, this is before we started themes with Sunday school. Oh, wow. I don't even remember. It's the neon puppets. Yeah, okay. And then there was like this rocket and then, you know, they went up into space and.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Yeah. And we still have some of those puppets, not all of them, but yeah. And I think brother, brother Baglan kind of kicked us off with that. Okay. Way back in
SPEAKER_02the day. I vaguely remember brother Baglan. Oh, I do. I do remember him. Yeah. That's been a long time.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And we
SPEAKER_02did,
SPEAKER_00he did a whole thing. He talked about puppets. Cause I remember he said, puppets don't get the Holy ghost. Cause he was talking about puppets. about how you kind of keep it separate, you know, the real, but, um, we did a whole puppet show in the sanctuary. It was like a presentation on, and I mean, this is, I wasn't even involved in kids ministry back then. It was, this has been a long time. It's
SPEAKER_02been a long time. Actually. Uh, I know we're not always supposed to mention names, but Paul dish can't just for that because I remember me and Brian were sitting up front. Oh, okay. And so, Oh, that's crazy. Slight, slight
SPEAKER_00memory there. Wow. Yeah. A long time ago. Yeah. So I, want to bring puppets back my idea is I don't know if we would ever now this might change things change you have seasons right I don't know if we would ever have a puppet show every Sunday because I just don't know that it's necessary really now I might change my mind but I'm thinking kind of along the lines of once a month would be cool
SPEAKER_02well also for recaps would be fun oh yeah like recapping the story as the puppet just a quick oh yeah that's like a quick review story or something. Because I know that's like, I feel like that's in like some theaters to where it's like they do that to where it's like, you know, they got the stick puppets. Maybe I'm thinking of like a medieval thing that I went to, but they like had the story, but then they recapped the story with like these stick cardboard
SPEAKER_00characters. Okay. Yeah. Just to make it interesting, but kind of
SPEAKER_02recall
SPEAKER_00what happened or whatever.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I mean, we could do that puppets too. That'd be pretty interesting.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. That would be cool. Yeah. I I need to reach out to brother and sister Breeden. They did puppets. I think they kicked it off during the pandemic 2020 and they did puppets and posted some online videos and had just, it took off. A bunch of people reached out to them and asked for scripting and all that stuff. But anyway, I just wanted to get some ideas. So I would like to bring it back. But one of the things we did with the last couple is we pre-recorded, and I don't know, maybe this is just a common thing, I don't know, but it It was revolutionary for me as we pre-recorded the show, the actors, the sound effects, all of that. And then the puppets, the people handling the puppets are just acting to the soundtrack, you know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I remember when that was done actually at the La Casa apartments.
SPEAKER_00I
SPEAKER_02remember being a part of that and helping out with that. That
SPEAKER_00was pretty awesome. Yeah, that's true. I remember that too. Yeah, we did some puppet shows at different apartment complexes for... Yeah. That was, that was super fun. Yeah. I love puppets. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. There are a lot of fun to do. Yeah. So that's something I definitely want to bring back is the puppets. I think the next thing that I'd like to mention is the action songs. Action songs. Yeah. I mentioned Brother Hodge. Man, I love, I love doing all the songs and the motions, but training. So each staff actually knows the motions rather than just one person knowing them and everyone trying to kind of copy. Yeah. Yeah. Because all the kids are looking around. They're like. Yeah, they're trying to figure it out too. They're trying to figure it out too. And so they're not focused just on one person. They're kind of looking around and then they see this person going left, that person going right, this person going up, this person going down. And they're all kind of confused. They're like, what do I do? Yes. And I know for me, like, because Anisha's usually up front, I had to like peripheral. Yeah, because you're up front. Like I'm looking at the kids, but I'm like trying to make sure I'm doing the same thing. Because sometimes I'll go off and I'm like oh no I can't remember what's next
SPEAKER_00yeah well and the thing with the training on that too is that right now it seems like we use the same I don't know three or four people up front and so it'd be nice if basically any staff could go up there and do the lead the song you know right I mean so Anisha kind of that's her one of her deals she runs the college and then she kind of leads that but it'd be great if any staff can go out there and do that the other that I didn't put it on here but we haven't done live music in quite a while because we've been doing so many action songs and when I say action songs you can still do it to live music but we've done a lot of with the tracks but we used to do about well actually I guess a hundred percent we used to do live music yeah I mean my son Adrian he plays drums in church now but he started playing drums in Sunday school when he was like five you know yeah and so I want to I I want to go back to doing more live. Like, I'd like it to be kind of 50-50, I think. I think
SPEAKER_02it's definitely doable, especially with the amount of musicians we have in Sunday School. Oh, yeah. I mean, I think, so Nicole's in Sunday School. She's a singer. Adrian, obviously, he could play bass or drums. I could play bass. Well, and you and Adrian can both play piano, too, if necessary. Yeah. Nicole can play piano. I mean, we only mentioned three people, but I know we have more.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. John plays
SPEAKER_02guitar. Aaron, he plays guitar. Aaron plays everything. Aaron plays everything. Yeah. It's got the hardest touch when it comes to music. And he sings. And he sings. Yeah. It's just blessed by the Lord.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Brother Aaron, man, I mean, if we were going down the list of what to do in Sunday school, I mean, he can, he sings, he plays every single instrument known to man. I
SPEAKER_02think it's shorter to go what he can't
SPEAKER_00do. Yeah. He can act. He can teach. Yeah. He's a talented guy. Pretty incredible. Yeah. So I would, I would like to get some more, uh, live music. And then like you said, the action songs. Yeah. If we could train that and then acting, um, okay. So I have acting in here and then I have teaching. Uh, so this is something I wanted to mention. So like, uh, my son Adrian, and then there's, uh, Louise, they kind of run the AV and they do that, uh, kind of exclusively now, but I I would like, if they are interested at all, for them to be able to do some acting. And I know at one point they were, both of them. And so I just use them as an example. There's others as well. There's some people that they're a little bit shy or nervous, and that's fine, but they are a little shy and nervous for the acting. And so they get up there, they kind of do a little small part and we have to push them. You know, Brother Keech is good about that. He's like, I'm not even going to wear a mic. You're leading this. You're going to lead offering today. So we have those segments and it's like it's usually you know three people often we do three teams of three and so you have some support up there and everything but then teaching and I don't even necessarily mean the main lesson it could just be talking to the kids about something it's different than being an actor absolutely in fact I kind of remember a few years ago with you making that transition a little bit oh man it's difficult yeah do you remember that I remember you being like just kind of horrified I remember, definitely. Because you had been acting for a while and
SPEAKER_02weren't super nervous about that. No, like I could be goofy and I can just act like a dunce all day long and not feel dumb, which is weird. But man, as soon as it gets serious, I get all nervous and I'm like, oh man. And I don't understand it. Actually, I did, when we did the four segments last Sunday school, a couple of weeks ago, I was with Jay Lynn and we had to recap the Bible. story and it was actually really easy i kind of like listening to you and listening to uh brother booker and uh who was there someone else that was doing you know teaching in front of the kids and the way you guys were talking wasn't like an adult talking to an adult it was oh yeah an adult talking to a four-year-old child you know even though they're not four but you know they've got child like minds and so yeah yeah you know diving into the story i don't know trying to think of how they Yeah, how they see it and stuff.
SPEAKER_00of like, how is this interesting to a kid, you know? And here's the thing, a little top secret revelation is adults, we like to hear it like a kid too. And so that's a revelation for me. Which we like to listen to Odyssey. Yeah, exactly, right. Yeah, so Odyssey, yeah, that's a good example. Odyssey is listened to by thousands of 40-year-olds, I'm sure, you know? And so that's a secret is we, if it's boring to kids, there's a good chance, not, not maybe as much, but a good chance that it's boring to adults too. Well, we have, this might end up being a longer podcast. We'll see what happens when we cut out some of my stories. Those are the parts we're going to keep,
SPEAKER_02especially that butcher in the beginning that I didn't even see was on the notes. Today's topic is, it's not here. All right. Well, let's
SPEAKER_00get started. That's a wrap.
