We all know about New Year’s Resolutions and what a bad rap they have. And while I still fall guilty of making a few myself-and failing with few as well-this time of year does set the tone for reflection and reevaluating.
So, in the context of new accomplishments and fresh goals, let’s talk about a few ideas to kick-off 2024.
There are many different methods of setting goals, monitoring milestones, and tracking progress. Today take a look at a few options that we’ve tried and some of the pros and cons associated. This certainly won’t be a comprehensive list, but we’ll get into some specific apps and methods and talk a little about the concept of goal setting and tracking.
A few things we try to cover:
Why goals are important.
The big picture.
A few paper and digital planner options.
Thank you.
SPEAKER_00Welcome to another episode, the place where we talk about kids ministry and take a peek behind the scenes. We try to share a little bit of what we've learned that works for us and some of our failures so you can avoid them. We release a new episode every Friday, and this is your Backstage Pass to see the magic or disaster that happens behind the scenes of our kids ministry. I'm your host, Gabe Baker, and today I'm joined by Brother Aaron. How's it going? It is going fantastic. How are you? I'm doing great.
SPEAKER_02Awesome. What are we talking about? Oh man, we are going to be talking about the perfect
SPEAKER_00planner. This time of year does set the tone for reflection and reevaluating. So in the context of new accomplishments and fresh goals, let's talk about a few ideas to kick off 2024. So there's many different methods of setting goals, monitoring milestones, and tracking progress. And today we're going to just take a look at a few options that we've tried and some of the pros and cons associated with those. This certainly won't be a comprehensive list, but these are just methods we've tried and we're We'll get into some specific apps and methods and talk a little bit about the concept of goal setting and tracking. So this is something
SPEAKER_02I've always been tongue in cheek passionate about because like you, I tend to create a lot of goals in the beginning of the year, namely the waistline goals, but those go to the wayside pretty quickly. It's kind of funny that we have this one scheduled because I've really felt a shift for me personally of bettering myself in all, in all areas. And so this has been fresh and in my mind lately. And so it was a good timing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. You know, it's funny. I used to say, and I still do like it, but I used to say that new year's was like one of my favorite holidays. Yeah. And that's why it's, it's like, it's kind of like a wipe the slate. Exactly. Exactly. Fresh start. It's a reset. Yeah. So it's, yeah. That's what I enjoy about it too. And like I said, in the opening, you know, new year's does the resolutions get a bad rap, you know, because of all the, Yeah, absolutely. And I got, you know, and these people that like skip around and stuff and I just, yeah, I'm not like, and so for me, the new beginnings or the new year is kind of, I guess it just fits with my personality and characteristics. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I'm with you too. And the thing is too, is you go to the stores and everywhere you go, there's 2024 calendars and planners and, and I'm the type, I just want to try and we're going to get into this too, but I want to try all of them. Yeah. I just want to buy three or four. And if it's a leather,
SPEAKER_00it's even better. and just fill it up. Yeah. It's funny because my daughter, she's kind of has inherited some of my organization and that kind of thing. And so she's, she's into being organized. So it's like, and now, I mean, she's 19, but when we could go to like Staples and it's like a kid going to a candy store, she still loves going, you know, and just like calendars and planners and looking at papers and just, you know, it's funny. All right. So I got a few notes here. One of them is, you know, why set goals in the first place? And I mentioned this on another podcast with Brother Kyle, I think it was. There's a saying, a goal without a deadline is just a dream. Yeah, absolutely. And so I think that that's, you know, we all need to, we all want to improve. And so goals help us do that. Like you talked about the waistline, right? I mean, goals, I mean, sometimes we fail, obviously, but I mean, not Obviously. Thank you. Clearly. Clearly we fail. Good thing this is not video. Yeah. But yeah, so we do fail. But goals are what helps us to move forward, you know, and to improve.
SPEAKER_02It's important as Christians and in any part. Now we're talking about Sunday school. But anything you're going to do for God, you should. It's good to set goals. Yeah. And the Bible says whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with might. Right. And so a way to track that and a way to start that is just doing your best. And then that goes into bettering yourself.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. It's not just doing your best. Like, like a lot of times that scripture that you just mentioned, we're thinking of the task at hand. Yes. But yeah, it goes further than that. It's deeper than that. It's, it's making yourself your best. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I mean, we can, we can equate it to just a general, I say general, that sounds carnal, but a general relationship with God. It's not just Sunday morning, Sunday night and weeknight. That's the only time you spend time with him and pray a pre-service prayer, you don't have a relationship with God. It takes time. It takes, when you don't want to get up and pray in the morning or you don't want to come to the church and pray, you do it. It's your goal. And I know this from personal experience, when you begin to do that, especially when you don't feel like it, that's typically when you have the good moves of God for yourself. And then it becomes like an appetite. It becomes something you want to do. You look forward, man, I get to go pray. And again, you're not always going to be deep in the spirit of God every time you pray, but it It's just taking those little steps, create traction and like the snowball, it gets bigger and momentum. Then it becomes a habit. Then it becomes something you do every single day because it's just who you are.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well, and I liken it to eating healthy. You know, we don't like, especially this time of year, we just finished up Christmas, right? So we don't want to eat healthy, but the more that you do, you create an appetite and you're like, oh, I want that salad, you know, or whatever it is. Proverbs 21.5. The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness, but of everyone that is hasty only to want. Now, just for fun, I did the message version. Eugene Patterson kind of paraphrases it, and I use it. I don't use it for studying, but I do use it sometimes for youth because it's funny. But here's what it says. Careful planning puts you ahead in the long run. Hurry and scurry puts you further behind. Yeah. That's good. I read this. There's a rule of thumb that for like Broadway, if you're going to be on stage less than 10 minutes, the rule of thumb is 120 practices for that less than 10 minute segment. And then if it's over that, then it's an hour for every minute that you're on stage.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00It's pretty incredible. It just
SPEAKER_02becomes you don't have to think about your lines at that point, which is the point. Yeah. Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_00Wow. So, yeah. Anyway, so I think it's important. It's important to set goals. I think it's actually, we could say, we could be as bold as to say it's God's will that you set goals. You know, there's a saying, if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans. Yes. And so I think that, you know, there is the flip side that we have to follow after his will and what he's trying to do and not just our own thing. But I believe that it is the will of God for, I mean, we got some plans as a church, you know, going to try to build a new building and different things. And so Those are all, all things that you can't do just spontaneously, you know? Absolutely. All right. So I have another note here. Um, the big picture, I think that goals should be a direct reflection of your overall mission. And so in the context of Sunday school, lest we get too far off track here with planners and such, I, we've talked before about having a mission, you know, and, um, and the culture and, you know, understanding the vision or, you know, all, all of those things. And of course, this probably in the new year, we're probably, we haven't done it in a while. I don't think we did it. We haven't done it in a couple of years, but I'd like to do not with the whole staff. We have a large staff, but with a few key people, I'd like to do a brainstorming. Yes. Yeah. I like, I like doing that. It's fun. So, and then that's where we can set some goals kind of, you know, for the year and, and even beyond. But the big picture is, I think that goals should be a reflection of the overall, over overarching mission. And so when we think about Sunday school, we should be looking at the long term. Like, what are we trying to make this into? Right. And obviously, there's some things that we're just trying to sustain. Yeah. But we're trying to grow. Yes. And so in developing staff, even all of those things, you know.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely. And that's good, too, because even, for example, my daughter, she just graduated from Sunday school. Oh, yeah. Back in June. And she was excited, but not happy at the same time. She left Sunday school and she keeps bugging me. In fact, I keep forgetting to tell you, keeps bugging me because she misses it so much. She wants to come back and be an actor. I'm like, yeah, I realize you get to talk in front of people and dance around and look stupid in a good way. Um, but because of it being, this is all she knows. Yeah. Right. This is all the culture of Sunday school is this at what we have. And so she doesn't want to get away from it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00She wants to stay put. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. It's funny. Cause we get, it seems like a lot of 12 year olds, you know, ours is five through 11. So 12 years old and they turn around and like, can I be staff now? I'm like, well, let's, let's wait a little bit here, but we are going to start the training. And so that'll, that'll help get some of those involved, you know? All right. So what I have with this big picture also is I kind of, I made this in notes. This is something that I've done for a long time. When I was a kid, I did this. And so, so I kind of have a breakdown working backwards and here's what my notes is. It's the long-term mission and then three to Five year goals, this year's goals, and then quarter slash monthly goals or milestones, your weekly goals, and then today's goals. And so the idea there, and we're about to jump into planners. And so I'm just going to jump ahead really quick to one of the planners. It's so old. I don't know if I'm sure they're still around, but Franklin Covey. So back in the day, they made paper planners and I think they might've had an app for a while and they might still have an app. But Franklin Covey. So that's, it's based around seven habits, but it's a planner and it kind of, that's kind of where I got this idea from. Yeah. Is, is basically your, your daily goals should reflect your life mission, you know, your longterm. Yeah. It's, it's pretty incredible really. I
SPEAKER_02mean, I remember you carrying that thing around. Yeah. When I was a young person, it was like the size of my iPad, maybe, maybe a little smaller, I think. And it was a leather and it had some binder rings in it. Right. Yep. It was like a, probably a Bible. a size of a Bible. Yeah. And that was, I always used to think that was so cool. Cause like you said, everything in your life is in there and it points toward that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. The
SPEAKER_02ultimate goal.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. It's yeah. And I think that that is hard sometimes to keep track of that, you know, especially with that, you got work and family and church and, you know, and your own personal life. And so then we're talking about Sunday school, this should apply in that And so when you're doing that with your personal life and it becomes kind of that habit, then it's a little easier. I think it's a learned process.
SPEAKER_02I'm not going to get into what it is exactly, but I've had a goal to where by December 31st of next year, I want to have accomplished. And I've got a list of, it's not huge, but it's a list of things that I want to have to be able to look back on and say, I did it. And I've got down, for example, one thing I want to read. This is so small for some people I know, but I want to read one book a month. That's nonfiction, self-help. I hate that word almost, but a leadership book. Self-improvement. There we go. I felt like I got a complex when I say self-help, a self-improvement book, a biblical study book outside of the Bible, one a month. And right now I'm in the middle of reading three books, which I've never done in my life. And I love it. I love it. And so having that goal in mind for me empowers me. It gives me something to shoot for. I'm not like, yes, I'm living for God and just swimming in the oceans of his grace. I've got somewhere I'm going and everything in life, my family's devotions point toward that. My outlook at my job. believe it or not, points toward that. The way I commune with society pushes me toward that same goal. And it's just, it's for me, it's very empowering to have that goal. And it's not so much checking the box every day, but it's, there's passion behind it.
SPEAKER_00Right. It's incredible. Yeah, no, that's good. I think, I think with Sunday school and this kind of, I don't want to get off track, but transferring vision is, I think sometimes maybe people could get burned out that are like, I'm not even just talking about a Sunday school leader. I'm just talking about us, a new school staff person could get burned out. Like, okay, I'm going here every Sunday or, you know, we rotate our staff. So, you know, I'm going once a month or whatever. I'm not sure. Do I really want to do this anymore? But if they understand what we're doing and where we're going and the, and the excitement and the vision there, then, then it's like, yeah, what we're doing today, this Sunday, what we do is, is pointing to this, this mission that we're on. That's what we're trying to do.
SPEAKER_02And then when that goal, whatever, that goal might be, for example, having a, I hate, I keep trying to say the term bus kids, but to have a kid that comes on our bus that, you know, is not part of the church. This is the only connection they have to see them standing at our altar calls, talking in tongues for the first time. Yes. That's makes everything that makes a late nights. That makes being in here every Sunday for a couple of weeks in a row. I mean, just so worth it.
SPEAKER_00Yes, absolutely. So I, I found, I was looking up on my phone while you were talking earlier, being all rude and stuff. But I found this. I meant to have this earlier. So this is from, I reference John C. Maxwell all the time because I read all of his stuff. But this is from his book called Today Matters. And it's a little poem. I think it's right at the beginning of the book. So I'm just going to read this because it's really good. It's called Just for Today. Just for today, I will choose and display the right attitudes. Just for today, I will determine and act on important priorities. Just for today, I will I will know and follow healthy guidelines. Just for today, I will embrace and practice good values. Just for today, I will seek and experience improvements. Just for today, I will act on these decisions and practice these disciplines. And then one day, I will see the compounding results of a day lived well. So good. Isn't that good? Just for today. Just for today. Small little commitment. Take a small step today. And do it tomorrow. And you know, this is something Pastor... pastor Burgess is so like, I don't even know if he's ever read that poem or anything, but he, he's the way his lifestyle is like this is his every day. It's like, this matters. Like he will make steps and, and instead of like, well, we could probably do it tomorrow or next week or whatever. He's like, let's do it today. Let's get it done right now. It doesn't matter
SPEAKER_02if it's 12 o'clock, you go to work.
SPEAKER_00Oh, well, let's just
SPEAKER_02get
SPEAKER_00it done. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. Okay. We are running out of time. We haven't got it. I got to the good stuff. So the perfect planner, I wrote down a few and I think hopefully you wrote down a few. So here's some paper options that I've looked at. Franklin Covey, as I mentioned before. And so Franklin Covey planner has like your mission statement and then it has a place for like, like all those things, you know, three, five year, this year's goals. And then it has like, you can write down your monthly goals and then weekly goals. The last one I had, I had a, a bookmark or whatever. or whatever that goes in the binder rings, had the weekly, like a planner in it, so you had your whole week on that thing, and it was like little inserts, and then you had your daily planner, and then it had like, there's these symbols, I still use them, there's these symbols that they use for the task is done, check mark, canceled at X, delegated is like a G with a circle around it, move forward is a arrow, and then in process is like a dot. And so I had the, you know, I used it, man. I used those symbols and everything.
SPEAKER_02So I tried to find them on Amazon, but I do know if you Google it, their website still sells a lot of it. I don't know what all, but it does.
SPEAKER_00They used to have a store up in Seattle somewhere or something. I remember going there to make a trip. Yeah. And then there's Panda Planner. So that's, that's a lot newer. I don't know how long they've been around, but I've used them a little bit and they, they probably made upgrades since I've used it, but It's kind of the same idea in a way. It has like mission-minded, you know, and it's got some like templates on their papers for exercising and different things. It's pretty cool. And then I don't know how to pronounce this, Mochi things. I think it's Mochi. Is it? Okay. So M-O-C-H-I. That one's cool if you are not as rigid because it's got like, or at least the one I had, it had a planner on the left hand. Like it was open, you know, you open the book and it has a planner type thing on the left hand and then it was a notepad or a grid notepad on the right. That's cool. And so you could just write random notes and stuff. So that was handy, you know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Well, I'll throw one in there that's somewhat paper. I used this when I was taking some college classes and it was incredible for it. It's Rocketbook. Rocketbook. That thing is so cool. It's not for everybody but just real shortly what it is. It's a spiral notebook and the paper you feel that there's a difference right away when you use it. It's almost a glossy Yeah, it's kind of slippery. Next one could be Yahoo mail. Next one could be Dropbox files, wherever you want it to go. And whenever you're done with that page, you're done taking notes for that day on that particular page. You just strike out, just put a line through where you want that to go. And then you open up the app through the app and you open, it opens a camera and it sounds clunky. I know, but open up a camera and it scans it and it immediately sends it where you want to go. And then, so like I would break it down to like psychology would be one file and all my notes would go right in that file automatically. That's cool. Oh, yeah. You know, English 101 or whatever. Everything would... And what's cool, the cool part about it is it's a never-ending notebook. You take water, you spray it, and you use like a microfiber cloth and it erases. That's why you have to use that. Yeah. And then the next day, you've got a fresh,
SPEAKER_00clean notebook. So, I worked with a guy. I was on a project and the project manager for the client used that. That's the first time I ever seen it. Oh, cool. And he showed me. He's like, I've had this for, I don't know, a long time. And it was kind of stained and stuff. And he said, that he was explaining that, yeah, you wash off or whatever and he's like, it gets really bad. He said, he put his in a microwave or something.
SPEAKER_02That's the original. The original, you'd sit, put it in the microwave and put a cup of water on it and it steamed it. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_00And you'd open it up and it's clean. It's so neat. So, yeah, that's kind of neat. Man, I never really tried it. I should try it. It'd be kind of cool. I have one you can borrow. They're neat. Yeah, that's cool. So, there's the best of both worlds. Now, digital option So I am at work and everything. I'm known as the no paper guy. I love paper. So I am very digital. In fact, I had all, I don't know, I think around 300 books or something. And we have a photo stream here at church, a men's photo stream. And I, you remember that? I posted. I've got some of them. You've got some of them. Yeah. You've got quite a few of them, I think. I've got a
SPEAKER_02handful.
SPEAKER_00And so I posted and I was like, I got to get rid of these because they're just taking up space. Yeah. I've read them all. And so the guys came and picked through them. And then I, you know what, I have a box, probably 10 or 15 that I forgot that weren't in that list. But anyway, so I got rid of them and I have, I don't know if I have all those ones cause I, you know, bought those already once, but I do have some of those, but I have, I don't know, probably 500 books on my phone. And so that's how I read now. And of course I'm a Mac guy. Well, I do both Mac and PC, but I, I have my phone, iPad, and MacBook, and so I can transfer across, but pretty much my phone. And so I read, and like what you said earlier, I do that too. I read three or four books at a time. A long time ago, there was a preacher, a young preacher that I was hanging out with, and he told me that that was a better way to comprehend.
SPEAKER_02It really is. It has helped me. I've never done that before, but it's made a world of difference. I'm reading a Maxwell book right now. I'm reading a John MacArthur leadership book and it's mainly not all the way through but it's mainly on the life of Paul Paul yeah I have the same book yes I might have gotten from you I did have
SPEAKER_01the same book probably years and then
SPEAKER_02I've got a one is theology book I'm reading
SPEAKER_00okay
SPEAKER_02and I'm telling you I don't know I don't know if it just opens a door in your brain or what
SPEAKER_00but yeah how he explained it and I don't you know he wasn't a psychologist or anything but how he explained it and it kind of makes sense is he's like your brain can only take in Yeah. I use a PC for work. And so it's dynamic, meaning that if I change it on my phone, you can literally watch it populate on the PC or wherever because it's online based. It's free. There might be a paid upgrade. There probably is. But I use a free one. I don't know what you'd need. Yeah. So that one, I use that one a lot for myself and for work. Trello. You are the Trello king. So Trello is something that we use a lot around here at church. I actually, I worked for the state and the state uses it. I've been using it for a long time, but Trello is really great for collaborating. We use it for, I'm youth leader and we use it for youth. Yeah. And so all the helpers have it and I can do, it's just, I'm not going to get into all the specifics because there's so much, but it's, it's a great collaborative tool and it has plugins and.
SPEAKER_02Tell you what the coolest thing is that I'm not super familiar with it, but the coolest thing that blew my mind is when we Did went to a church conference a couple hours away and I had it and you sent it out and I had on there all the kids that ride into my car and I could checklist that they were in my car and everybody got it. Yeah. It was just a cool,
SPEAKER_00just cool. And that's, yeah. And we use it a lot when we go on trips and I'll be like, check off the, you know, so I can look and I can see attendance. Yep. And then I, you know, we never lose people, but I can, I can like text somebody. My wife's probably the worst. Hey, you're, you're checking. You're not checked off. Do you have everybody? Yeah. Oh yeah. I just forgot to check it. It's neat. Yeah. So it's very, very handy. It's really good. G-Tasks by Google. I used to use this quite a bit. I don't really use it anymore. I'm a huge Google fan. Yeah. But I just, I don't know. I like Todoist and Trello. Yeah. And then there's Minimalist. It's like minimalist, but it's minimalist. And that's a good one. It's just a simple. Yeah. It's very basic. That's what I like about it. It's very basic. Basic and simple. Minimalistic. And then Apple Reminders. I threw this in here because, I don't know, it's been like a year or so ago. I watched a YouTube video on this guy that turned Apple Reminders on its ear. I mean, he was like doing some really cool stuff with it.
SPEAKER_02I have a love-hate relationship with that. I had to delete it because it made me feel so guilty because I was supposed to take my vitamins at a certain time every day. And I'd get ticked every time it came on. I'm like, ah, forget it. So I finally just deleted it. It's terrible.
SPEAKER_00Oh, man, that's funny. I had a boss that he did something like that. like that, but it was to drink water. Oh yeah. Drink water. And so tell them every once in a while, it'd be like thing, you know, you drink water. And then, um, I threw this one on here just because trying to kind of pull it back to Sunday school. A lot of this is personal use, but planning center. So planning center. Now it's, it's paid, you know, you have to pay for it. It's a subscription service, but our church uses it. And like, we just did this big event that I talked about with heart of Christmas. And I, in the cast is roughly a hundred people probably. And so I think the biggest group that I sent out was like 74. Yeah. And so imagine trying to send out 74 text messages or even with a group apps and all that kind of stuff. It just gets messy. Somebody's going to not get it. Yeah. And not only that, but you're trying to like, okay, these people need to be here at six 30. These people don't need to be here till eight. And you know, and so planning center is what our church uses and um and we use it for events and stuff but it's check it out it's really cool again it does cost money we use planning center services now they have all kinds of different what would you call it branches or plugins or something but planning center services is what we use to plan yeah uh well to plan our services music department singers musicians a little bit yeah yeah we plan like like okay so we have on there all of our singers as like a group or whatever That's neat.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and there's another one that, so I never really got into this, but Evernote is something somebody could
SPEAKER_00check out. Yeah, so I know Evernote was really popular. I still use it some, not a whole lot, but I used Notemaster was one that was, I don't know, it was probably kind of like Evernote or something. I just liked the layout, the interface of it, and you could lock notes and all that kind of stuff. All right, so just to kind of recap here, we have why set goals in the first place, and setting specific goals helps us articulate where we're going. Start with the end in mind. Begin with the end in mind. Yeah, that's one of the habits. It is. Habit three, I think. Begin with the end in mind. And then the big picture. So our daily tasks. Now, obviously you have, you might have a grocery list on your daily tasks, but your daily tasks, some of them should reflect your overall mission. And then, of course, we just talk about what's your method. Choose paper or digital or both. Start using it and consistently use that method. And then don't worry about that. That's the other thing is I have, I interrupt myself. Don't worry about committing. You can change later. That's the other thing is I sometimes I'll be like, oh, I don't know. Should I use this app? You know, it's 99 cents. Should I use this? Should I use this app? Am I going to use this for a year?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah. I'm with you. It's hard. It's not even that you're changing, but you're so stuck and it could even be a rut. You're so stuck in what works for you, but there could be something that will help you get farther than what you are now. Open a door. It'll take you different places.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And that's where like, yeah, to try, you know, try different things and like at work, sometimes we use different things and we're forced to, you know, we have to change. And so I think it's good actually in some ways because you learn different, you know. Yeah.

Just do it and let that momentum take you. And, man, it's exciting once you really gain traction and you find what works for you. Right. Man, it just becomes limitless. And, man, God will take you to some cool
