You have to be attractive to work in kids ministry!
Not really-if that were the case, many of us would be disqualified.
We borrowed the U.G.L.Y. acronym from Christian comedian, Jonathan Slocumb; he says, U.G.L.Y. stands for, U Gotta Love Yo'self!
Today we're talking about teamwork.
A few of the things we try to cover:
Why have a team in the first place?
How big is your vision?
Having a team mindset.
Different team members are at different levels.

Welcome to another episode, the place where we talk about kids ministry and take a peek behind the scenes. We try to share a little bit of what we've learned that works for us and some of our failures so you can avoid them. We release a new episode every Friday, and this is your backstage pass to see the magic or disaster that happens behind the scenes of our kids ministry. I'm your host, Gabe Baker. And today I'm joined by Brother Brent. How's it going, Brother Brent? Oh, it's going very well. How are you doing? Oh, I'm doing good. I'm excited to be back in the booth on the mic. So you want to mention today's topic?
SPEAKER_00Oh, today's topic is don't be ugly.
SPEAKER_01Don't be ugly. So if you want to work in kids ministry, you must be attractive. Sorry, bad news for a lot of people, myself included. No, not really. If that were the case, many of us would be immediately disqualified, starting with me. But the word, quote, ugly here is actually an acronym. We borrowed this from Christian comedian Jonathan Slocum. And so he says, you, G-L-Y, you got to love yourself. Or he says, yo-self. So you got to love yourself. And he's like, he says, basically, when you're ugly, nobody wants to be around you. So he's like, he says, the next time you see somebody ugly, just say, you know what? You got to love yourself. So I don't know really a lot about him. So hopefully he's a good guy. I think he is a Christian comedian. But I like the premise of what he said. He's basically, when you're ugly, nobody wants to be around you, so you've got to love yourself. When we say don't be ugly, we're talking not really about what you look like. We're talking about your actions, how you interact with your team, how you interact with kids in Sunday school. So that's what today's kind of focus on is meshing with your team.
SPEAKER_00Don't be ugly. Yeah, don't be ugly. Don't be the ugly one in the group.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. You know, I used to say – I would say hurt people hurt people. And so when people get offended easily, they tend to offend other people or hurt other people like they retaliate. It's like they take offense at something that wasn't even meant to be offensive and now they are ending up hurting other people. Right.
SPEAKER_00That's true. That's very true.
SPEAKER_01And so that's kind of the premise here is don't be – ugly when you have a team. But I guess to kick this off, why have a team?
SPEAKER_00Right. Why have a team? Well, one, I guess, would be the easy one is you can't do it all yourself. You need different personalities, I think. And then also I notice different people in our group, in our Sunday school group, will bring out different characters maybe in other people as well. Something you don't see outside of Sunday school, but then you come in Sunday school and it's so much easier to work off one another or and together yeah whether that's goofy or just uh yeah you play off of each other exactly you're playing off each other and that's that's the the fun for us is sunday school teachers who get sometimes to have more fun than the sunday school kids
SPEAKER_01maybe yeah well and especially in our environment because we ad-lib so much right we don't really script monologue or anything or dialogue we just we do practice but we ad lib everything.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because it's not always going to go perfect. We've seen that numerous times, whether it's during our August service where it's like we have this plan and then certain members aren't back here yet because they're being part of choir and then it's like, okay, well, that was 10 minutes ago and we're time to ad lib and fill in and just make something up and just do something. And that happens quite, I wouldn't say quite often, but Often enough that we have to make it work. You have to make, you have to do something. And that's, again, it's so much easier when you have a good team. Oh, yeah. You know, because.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, if everybody is on the same page, you have a team that's backing you up, then, and you have a team that's cohesive enough, like you have experience with that team, that they understand the gist of where we're going. Right. And they can make it
SPEAKER_00work. Yeah, we can say we just wrapped up a certain Bible story and now we're having to ad-lib because church isn't out yet, altar call, whatever the case may be. Well, then we try and pick something up like that maybe and just kind of add to it or just random crazy at times. Yeah, well, and I'll come
SPEAKER_01backstage sometimes like in that situation, like you just mentioned church isn't over yet. And so I'm like, okay, we got to do some filler and the staff already knows. And so they're like, I see I'm getting some stuff together. I'm like, so we got to do filler. Like, we know. Like, what are you guys doing? Oh, we got the doctors. We're about to, you know. I'm like, oh, okay, you guys
SPEAKER_00got it. Medical emergency about to happen.
SPEAKER_01So, yeah, let's explain that a little bit. Just you brought it up. So at our August services, we – so I was just meeting with some guys that were at Kingdom Kids, the big children's church conference. And I was saying that what we do is on a very, very, very much smaller scale, but we kind of do – it's a similar idea. we basically have a conference happening, a youth conference that's happening. And it's, what is it? Thursday, Thursday night, Friday day, Friday night, Saturday. Right. Yep. And then we have like a big meal on Saturday. So we have this youth conference every year in August. And on Thursday night and Friday night, we have children's church,
SPEAKER_00essentially Sunday school, however you want to say. Sunday school on a Thursday night. Yeah. And Friday night.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And so, we have many of our staff are in choir. And so they have to go out when we start, you know, at the beginning of service,
SPEAKER_00like a prayer. We have our start time. Everyone's here. And
SPEAKER_01it's always, it's chaos. I mean, we might be, now we try to plan for it, but it's, the service obviously takes precedence. And so whenever they're, they don't want to wait, they can't wait for the choir. So when the choir A lot of times it's a pastor from another church calling the choir up. Right. So when they call the choir up, we have like two minutes and we're in a separate building. Yeah. So they got- They
SPEAKER_00got some hustle. Strip out of the costume. In their costumes there or something. It would be good for them to go in there in their costumes, I think, maybe next time.
SPEAKER_01Well, one year we had, it was like just a shout out service. It was Friday night, I think. And they were trying to figure out some of them were in the choir they're trying to figure out how to get back in and so they ran the aisles and ran out the doors and came back to Sunday school
SPEAKER_00hey it works it works yeah yeah I think I remember that I was that's been a couple years back but I remember that happening yeah yeah last last this past August wasn't wasn't too bad in terms of them coming and going they think it was pretty yeah pretty seamless but I think before we it was a little bit there was one I think the Thursday night or whatever and again i think even this past year like the thursday night i wasn't part of it i think i was yeah we're trying to rotate yeah and uh you guys didn't even get like a quarter way through the script i think or something yeah something like that i don't know what happened i can't remember but yeah
SPEAKER_01and we're always we are heavy on content because i always say i'd rather run out of time than stuff to do
SPEAKER_00yeah
SPEAKER_01and so but we've been blessed because we've last few years we've had our friend brother phil booker here yes and so i can always just like throw Throw him out there. We need you to do something. Do something for the next little bit so we can continue on with the story or whatever. And he's awesome. He does a good job. So, okay, we're getting kind of off the rails, but basically have a team. Yeah, so like you can't do it all yourself. And if you can, if you can do it all yourself, if that's your vision, if you can accomplish the vision by yourself, I would, this might, man, I don't want to be offensive, but your vision might be too small
SPEAKER_00right
SPEAKER_01you know i mean we do we do some uh for us big things and uh i do a lot of it but i can't do it by myself at all i mean we have huge our team here the way we do it is uh we rotate our staff weekly basically we have some that stay in a lot because it's character driven driven yeah yeah but we have a staff of i don't know i think it's like 30 right now Sounds about right, yeah. Right. Yeah, I was going to say something on that. You know, if you're keeping it, oh, you know, small, you
SPEAKER_00know, that's not the purpose. Right. Yeah. So again, if you're not to hurt somebody or maybe all you got is one person to run Sunday school, but looking for those chances, those opportunities to grow obviously is something you want to do. And that means obviously bringing in more help, whether that's one person to help. periodically as a guest once in a while. Things like that. Cameo appearances. Yeah, cameo appearances.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, and that's the other thing is you not only share responsibility, but you can share success. Yes. And you get other people, they get to be a part of something that maybe, like you said, they didn't really think about or didn't know existed. Now all of a sudden it's...
SPEAKER_00Boom, eyes are open and
SPEAKER_01it's
SPEAKER_00like, wow, what a blessing this is. I mean, again, not everyone's called to be a pastor. This could be what you're called to do. Again, some of it's, I don't want to say a small scale, but you're still fulfilling a work for God. Right. Well,
SPEAKER_01and I think the key thing with what I said earlier is the vision, is even if you're in a smaller church, smaller Sunday school, you can have that vision and take it a step at a time and your vision is bigger than just you. Yeah. You know, like one day we're going to do this, you know. Yeah. And we, I mean, we're still reaching. We want to do more than what we do. Oh, yeah. For sure. I
SPEAKER_00mean, I don't think, you know, it just in past, you know, we had our COVID year. Yeah. And I know you had mentioned in the past that we averaged 60 to 70 bus kids maybe at peak times. Yeah, we were getting
SPEAKER_01close to about 70. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And I mean, we're building that up now. I mean.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, last week.
SPEAKER_00Building it back up. Yeah, I think the last
SPEAKER_01couple of weeks it's been right around 60 or maybe a little below 60, I think. So, yeah.
SPEAKER_00And you notice when like, or at least actually I've noticed when there's certain bus kids that aren't here and other ones are, and then it'd be, okay, if all of them came at on a Sunday morning instead of okay these ones aren't here this week yeah the other ones aren't the next week but they are you know back and forth if they all came it'd be I mean there's there's been a couple times where it's like wow there's a lot of kids yeah where's the extra benches yeah
SPEAKER_01which is good yeah and we I was just thinking about this the other day I was cleaning up after Sunday school and I was like you know we need a plan for having to turn our Sunday school because right now Right. Yeah. So... So having a team is also, you know, going back to kind of the don't be ugly, is having that team mindset of that we're all moving towards the same goal. We're all on the same team, and it's not about my agenda or your agenda. It's, you know, the mission. And really, it's the umbrella of, you know, doing the work of God. But I would say more directly, it's our pastor's vision. And that's the key thing in all of this is working with your pastor to fulfill what he sees, what is his vision. So I was at the Children's Ministry Conference in Southern California, and we were there a few years ago, and Brother James Wang, late Brother James Wang, he passed away during COVID, but he did an illustration that was just awesome. And he was talking about... I can't remember all the steps, so I'm not going to do it justice, but I'm going to try to kind of cover it a little bit. So he was kind of talking about bus ministry and Sunday school, and sometimes these are almost like two separate entities. And so bus, he was using the example like bus ministry can be like, we're bringing these kids. You need to have your act together, Sunday school. We're bringing all these kids. You need to have it together and make it awesome. And Sunday school is looking at bus ministry and saying, like hey these kids are wild orangutans you know what do you do before they get here yeah and so and he so he used this whole thing he had an iPad and he had he had a song I can't remember what song it was a slow song and he it started out like again I can't remember the details but it like it was drums and you just hear this drum beat you know and then it's like the bass and then piano and then by the end it's got the whole band and vocals he's adding to it it's like it It was some kind of loop program and he's adding to it. And so he was showing how everything works together. You know, the bus works together. And then he showed the, he's also showed like a life cycle. And it was something like, and again, I apologize for those that know this better than I do, but he showed a life cycle like something like this. A kid comes on the bus, gets, you know, repents, baptized, gets the Holy Ghost. starts coming to church and now they're in Sunday school and then they're a bus captain or something and then they turn around and now they're working in Sunday school
SPEAKER_00you know it's a life cycle heard that testimony before yeah numerous times I mean I can't single out a single person brother Vaughn Morton yeah brother Vaughn Morton yeah and then I think we've heard some again similar stories of that and it's yeah it's absolutely right it's a it all it's it's a you know it's a circle so we're all we're all part of it you know bus ministry to the Sunday school teachers and everyone in between there whether you're just we call them facilitators they're out with the kids maybe not doing part of the acting or have a but it's
SPEAKER_01really a harder job really
SPEAKER_00it is yeah it takes certain people to do that or else you know some of us would probably just grab the kids and throw them out and be like nope you're not listening today see ya I wouldn't say who would do that but probably me maybe yeah yeah
SPEAKER_01no we We have some great facilitators. I mean, they do awesome.
SPEAKER_00Again, it's all part of it. Like you said, there's, there's, uh, the mindset. I think that's the, the big thing is the mindset of. The mindset. We're a team. We're a team. Yeah. So, you know, we're, I mean, you can even think of it as a, oh, I'm not, I don't get to do the, the lesson today or, you know, someone might be always doing the lesson. We got certain people that do certain things more times. They tend to do it more often. Yeah. Yeah. And it's like, there's no reason to be upset about it or anything. And again, I think our group for the most part, unless I'm totally blind to it. No, we don't have that. We don't, we don't have that issue. We don't have an issue like that. People love to be involved. Whichever part, we take it and we go with it. You know, sometimes we, others do better maybe than certain people. Well, and that's the thing too,
SPEAKER_01is that people are going to be inclined to do better at certain things, right? We always joke, like Brother Arter, Steve Arter, he does prayer requests quite a bit. And we do throw that out sometimes. I'll joke, I'll be like, well, Brother, or you're not quite getting it, so we're going to have you do prayer
SPEAKER_00requests again. Yeah, we're going to have you do it again. Or I'll
SPEAKER_01be like, you didn't do a very good job last week, so we're going to have so-and-so do it instead.
SPEAKER_00Right, right. Yeah, it's true. It's funny like that. And again, that's the team. Not everyone is going to do the same job as another person. Yeah, and
SPEAKER_01actually there's value in that too because sometimes people bring – okay, so last Sunday we're doing – a pirate theme that we've done before. In fact, we've done it twice before over the years. Last time we did it was 2018. And the main character's name is William. And so Brother Miles, we got to have him on the podcast, but Brother Miles is William. And I came back there and I was like, I said, Brother Miles is the most unique William we've ever had. He's got like the really thick Irish accent. He does a
SPEAKER_00great job. Yeah. I don't think I've got to be. Have you not been in I think at the very beginning when he was. Oh, okay. Well, I guess I can tell. You're in on the Navy side a lot. I'm more on the Navy side. Yeah,
SPEAKER_01yeah. So, yeah, he, and it's just, it's funny, you know, because it's different than what we've had. We had two other guys play that part in the past, and he's just totally different. They were kind of similar, and he's just totally different. It's cool. That's interesting, yeah. Yeah. But the other thing is with that, and this is on me especially, is so realizing that people are different levels right is don't assume that they should just know right I have found myself before and I'm trying to be self aware enough that I'm not this way anymore I think but I found myself frustrated sometimes at people but then when I step back because I you know didn't do something or because they did something and I step back I'm like wait a minute how would they even know that they were supposed to do that yeah I never taught him that I never told him
SPEAKER_00your vision was a bit different when than what they
SPEAKER_01yeah and so I can't just assume that they're gonna know which we're gonna hopefully solve this soon we're I'm hoping probably the beginning of next year I'm hoping to start a training right Sunday school training so that will I mean that doesn't you know we can't abdicate our responsibility to nurture people along but that will hopefully kind of set some guidelines right and that's the other thing so even though sometimes it's easier just to do something yourself yeah you know like trying to teach your kids how to tie their shoes it's like let me just do it yeah come here let me tie it and I fall into that trap a lot because it's like you get so busy and it's like I'll just do it myself it's easier but you put a lid on your ability when you do that because eventually you can't do it all right
SPEAKER_00yeah and then you're like you said, you're capping the, the team, their growth, what they're, you know, if you're not letting them necessarily grow in Sunday school, then, then they're, we're not going to grow, you know, they're going to be, they're going to stay the same. And, you know, you, you know, the new ones from the ones that have been here, you for a while, you know, like there's, there's certain people that there's just a flow of what they do and what is expect. I don't even know if I say expected, but just of how things are flowing or how our Sunday school flows yeah there's just that and then there's the new people that you can almost see kind of a deer in headlight yeah like I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be doing here or you know a situation where it's like I don't really know what I'm my part is it's like well here I mean at least I've noticed like the people that have been here more or maybe are just a little more familiar with it or just
SPEAKER_01right
SPEAKER_00whatever just jump in they can just jump in yeah it's like yeah yeah I'm just gonna do this or something
SPEAKER_01that's a good point because I do remember just not just a few months ago situation just like that where we had somebody and and I think they're they'll do great but they're just totally lost and it was again it was kind of almost assuming that they would just know what to do yeah and and a bad on our part for assuming that you know but they
SPEAKER_00just what do you mean you don't know what you're supposed to wear it's offering you're supposed to wear the same thing that everyone the other two people are wearing or I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, my daughter works backstage and sometimes she's like, they're not even in their costume. Tell them they got to get in their costume. Well, the script is right there. I know, but they don't know what that is. Not everybody's used to it. Yeah, so yeah, hopefully, I don't know. I got to figure out some of this training. I think it's going to be, I would like for it to be a combo of classroom and almost like a hands-on, like maybe a mock Sunday school.
SPEAKER_00Go through a bit of a Yeah. And
SPEAKER_01then, and then of course the style we do now is more like an apprenticeship, I guess, but, but put all that on the front end and then, and then have them come into actual lives on this.
SPEAKER_00I think that'd be kind of a cool process. Yeah. Cause I know we've, there's certain people that were in it for a bit and then aren't in it as often. Yeah. So there, again, their, their growth is stunted, I guess. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. So they come in, they're like,
SPEAKER_01well, that makes it hard with 30 people when you're rotating. Yeah. And when it's like, okay, yeah, we're, we're rotating 30 people, but these four are in here almost every Sunday because their characters are recurring
SPEAKER_00roles. Yeah. That is part of the storyline. It's a, which with
SPEAKER_01this one, what's happening. And we didn't do this last time, but we have the theme characters like captain patch and scar and scab. And, uh, we have master chief, the captain, uh, Daisy, Betty, you know, all these, And so there's all those theme characters on the Navy side and the pirate side. But then we have, we're doing a, we've deviated some, like last week we did something different, but we are doing a series on Joseph. Right. So I'm trying to keep Pharaoh the same,
SPEAKER_00Joseph the same. See, I was wondering about that because I talked to Kyra, my daughter. I was like, hey, so what was Sunday school? You know, wanting to see what she remembered. Okay. It was not the story of Joseph. And I'm like thinking to myself, oh, I wonder if he's keeping certain storylines going with certain other, you know, I just had assumed, I guess, that we were continuing on the same story for the past few weeks.
SPEAKER_01Basically what it is is we had some of these stories from before. So like we did the shipwreck and it was talking about leadership, Christians being leaders. And so just the story is Paul and the shipwreck, you know, at the island of Malta and the prisoners on the boat. And so it just worked so well that I felt like we should keep that story. And so there's a couple of stories we kept in. And so we're doing, you know, we'll do Joseph like a couple of weeks in a row. And then we got another story that would do Joseph again. I think that we're at the point now we're a little bit over halfway through the theme. And I think the rest of the Bible story is Joseph. So
SPEAKER_00I forget where we left up. I thought it was.
SPEAKER_01So the next part is going to be Pharaoh's dreams that's right yeah and Joseph getting out of prison yeah that's right so but okay so before we sign off here one of the things I wanted to talk about is with teamwork and going back to our title don't be ugly right you gotta love yourself so I wanted to talk about like I guess conflict or having an environment where there isn't conflict and so one thing I think I feel like you're pretty good at that like your personality you know it's kind of more laid back okay here's an example I've seen it before where somebody can walk in and say something rude in a joking way they are just kidding and so this is like let's say it's on a Sunday morning we do practice at 830 you walk in and they say that and it just sets the wrong tone even though they're kidding it sets the wrong And so then there's this quote-unquote bickering back and forth. Again, it's all in joking, but yet there's an underlying...
SPEAKER_00It plants a seed almost, right?
SPEAKER_01Have you ever seen that? I mean, like, where you know it's totally a kidding
SPEAKER_00thing. It's totally innocent and, you know, it's like... But
SPEAKER_01yet it does. Like you said, it plants a seed and
SPEAKER_00it's like... It's totally irrelevant to where we're at right now and what's going on, but yeah, it plants... It does, yeah. It plants a little bit of a seed and it's like... Or like a cloud hanging over us all of a sudden. You look around going, wow, this was all fun and games a year or a minute ago. And then, yeah, no, I agree.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and I've tried to make an effort because I can be that cynical or whatever. I can be that person. And I know that in the morning it's probably worse
SPEAKER_00than a Sunday morning. Sunday morning, yes, because nothing goes right on Sunday morning. Yeah, exactly. No flat tires, never running late on a Sunday morning. Everything goes. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So I, you know, typically I'll try to, I'll try to go the other way, you know, and just greet people and, you know, we want to, you know, set the right tone and everything. But so I think there's that. And I think that's a, I guess, to give a little bit of a how to in this podcast with some of the teamwork is I think that you can watch that. And I don't mean being like fake. Yeah. You know what I mean? I mean, I don't mean being fake nicey and having to be all fluffy. I don't know how to say it, but just being careful on how you approach some of that. I think it can set the tone. Not that you can't joke and say things and have a banter, but you have to be careful and think of your timing.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yes, I agree. There's, you know, again, a lot of different personalities when we're talking to the team. there's people of i mean all ages in our in our group that are you know from younger to older yeah you know from exactly you
SPEAKER_01know all the way yeah
SPEAKER_00teens to to 50s uh i don't want to say other any older than that but there might be you know we won't say yeah but we do get some older people helping us and we always appreciate that and but yeah i mean so again you're dealing with all the conflict in between different
SPEAKER_01a lot of demographics there
SPEAKER_00yes yes so much and And it's funny because you can pick up on that pretty quick on who is, I don't want to say a sour grape, but who is a sour grape versus those that can just brush it off or whatever and just carry on. And
SPEAKER_01carry on through
SPEAKER_00it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And I think that's something I would like to get even better at. I think we do well. Our team is good. But I would like to get better at being able to be close enough close-knit enough and to be transparent enough where we can, you know, again, you have to be careful on this. You have to know your place, but to be able to call people out. Like, hey, what's going on? Are you, you know, something going on or do we need to work through this? You know, and so that's, and again, if we go back to, we have the same goal. We're trying to, you know, do this work. You know, we're trying to minister to kids. Yeah. We're trying to do this Sunday school, fulfill the vision. And so let's not let our pettiness.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. Yeah. And like you said, the goal, you know, is that something I just, you know, came to me like starting out your Sunday morning. What's our goal? What's our goal here?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Like it, yes, it's to have some fun, you know, I don't want to say entertain the kids, but yes, entertain the kids in a way that they're want to come back to Sunday school. Yeah. That it'll Right. Like you said, it doesn't work. It doesn't work. It's not good. We need to be able to move through that to work around it and go, okay.
SPEAKER_01I like something that Steve said in one of our podcasts. He likened it to like when you go to work, you got to leave your problems at the door, you know, your own problems at the door and come into work. And I think, you know, I understand there's elements of when people are going through something and, you know, it's going to affect them. And that's where I hope we can get, you know, where we're close enough that we can be able to deal with that as a team. Right. And team members. But then there is the flip side of being able to say, okay, let me, I'm here now and let me brush that off. We're here. This is practice time and I'm going to give it my all and I'm going to, you know, I understand the mission here and I'm going to put in my all, you know, and put those things aside.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, exactly. Put put them aside. Uh, let's, let's do Sunday school. Yeah. You know? And again, I don't necessarily think we have a, maybe I'm blind to it. I don't know, but I don't see a lot of it that we deal with. Um, you know, I do see it stuff once in a while, but for the most part, I'd say, you know, and again, it just comes down to, I think also just personalities. Some people, you can bounce off of so good and just, you know, yeah, it plays well. You do it, you roll with it, You add lib, you do everything, and all is good, and then, you know. Some people, it's more work. Yep, some people, it's more work, definitely. And
SPEAKER_01that's the thing, too, is, like, you know, getting to where I try to spread things out a little bit, and so getting to where we recognize, okay, maybe it's just a personality clash, whatever, but where we can work through it. It might be more work. It might not be as fluid, but yet we just, we do it. still
SPEAKER_00you know clearly we don't want two people that maybe don't see eye to eye on most good days yeah doing rival parts in a in one of the scenes or something you know I don't know how it would end but you know
SPEAKER_01well actually that might
SPEAKER_00be a better way to go yeah it could be good you don't know yeah but going to the team thing that just kind of on the team thing you know we got a lot of people that have been doing this for a long time yeah I think of you know brother Aaron and brother Brennan like Brennan talking I think in one of the earlier podcasts of he was in Sunday school when some of these things we've talked about were going on and now he is he's a key character or has a lot of key characters because of his personality is he can just he can just be so goofy and so all sorts of good stuff and same with Aaron they've been doing it so long whereas me it's like you know still taking into it but you can work so good with them I think because of just who they are their personalities
SPEAKER_01right yeah you can bounce
SPEAKER_00off of it yeah and Versus, you know, people that maybe haven't done it as often or are new. It really is more work trying to...
SPEAKER_01Because now you're carrying
SPEAKER_00it. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. And it's interesting to see because I can picture those moments in my head of, okay, yeah, I've got to carry this because I've got two people that are new and nothing wrong with the new people or anything like that. Right, right. But they don't know what to do or how to like... We've got time to kill. We've got time to kill. We've got, you know, two minutes or three minutes on this cart. And it's like, okay, we can't just go out there and be like, okay, offering kids. Who brought offering? All right, come on. No, we got to
SPEAKER_01do the lesson
SPEAKER_00and work into it and have some fun. And, you know, it's not just, okay, we went out and did offering and then go walk away. It's like, no. So again, it's the team. And obviously, you know, whomever may be in charge of your Sunday school um obviously is going to know personalities and who works well with each other and different things so that's yeah that'll help
SPEAKER_01yeah and that's and that's kind of my job is i try to put people in the sweet spot as much as i can and then sometimes purposefully you know try and like work in those new people or whatever and brother keach he's good about if somebody's new he he'll make them carry the ball he's like no you're you're gonna have the main part here you're you were supposed to remember the The memory verse. Yeah. You told
SPEAKER_00me. Yeah. And that's exactly true. I mean, sometimes you just got to get thrown in and see what you can do. Yeah. You know? Get thrown into the fire. Or the deep end, so to speak. And like you said, seeing, you know, you want to set people up for success. I know that's a saying. Yeah. But you do. You want. Yeah. Oh, we want them to do well. Yeah. You want to bring out the good in people and what they're good at. Yeah. You know? So, that's obviously important.
SPEAKER_01All right. Well, to recap here, so basically your vision should be big enough that you got to have a team. Work together, not against each other. Again, going back to just be careful on your environment and you shouldn't have to walk on eggshells. We're not saying that, but just be mindful of, you know, don't, it's not that funny that you have to say it. Right. You know, if it's going to offend. So
SPEAKER_00Conscious of... other people, other personalities.
SPEAKER_01Right. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_01And then take the time and effort to develop others. That's kind of what we were talking about. It's just those new people. And I'm looking forward to this training and we'll, we'll be talking
SPEAKER_00about that more
SPEAKER_01as we
SPEAKER_00get into it, but that'll, that'll be fun. I think, um, because again, you have a good mix of the veterans, the in-betweens and the news. All right. Well, teamwork makes the dream work. Yep.
SPEAKER_01So I think that's a wrap.
SPEAKER_00Awesome. Thank you.
