Welcome to our debut episode!
This is your backstage pass to kids ministry.
Today Aaron and I talk about creating a Bible story to be acted out on stage in Sunday school. This episode is really a peek behind the scenes as we brainstorm and come up with some ideas for Joseph in the jail with the butler and baker.
A few points we attempt to cover:
- Bible stories for the sake of just knowing the story
- Making it relatable to kids
- Using comedy (and when not to)
- Costumes, props and stage decor
- Practice & improv
It gets a little crazy with some of our ideas, but hopefully you can get something useful out of it - we at least got some ideas for our Joseph Bible story coming up.
Thank you.
SPEAKER_01Welcome to season one of our podcast, the place where we talk about kids' ministry and take a peek behind the scenes. I'm Gabe Baker, and this is where we try to share a little bit of what we've learned that works for us and even those failures that didn't work so well, so hopefully you can avoid them. We release a new episode every Friday, and we will attempt to show the magic or disaster that happens behind the scenes of our Sunday school each week. So today we got Brother Aaron and myself. Hello, hello. Hey, how's it going? Fantastic. How are you? Good. Today's topic, you want to introduce the topic for today? Sure. Today's topic is going to be Bible story on stage. Bible stories are an integral part of our Sunday school. So there's many times when we might like, you know, air quotes here, but tell a Bible story. We usually almost always act it out in our Sunday school. There are many ways this can be done. In fact, we do it several different ways. There's also different levels on how we might do it. Like, you know, a full-on complete stage play all the way down to maybe just a quick sketch or skit. Now, I'll admit that usually when we resort to the quick sketch, it is because of a lack of preparedness on my part. Well, there's nothing wrong with a Bible skit. It should be because that's what it's called for, not because we're not prepared, which sometimes happens all too often. But today, so we want to just look at some ideas of how to go about creating the full on stage play. And so right now, just to kind of let everybody know, we're currently in a pirate theme and we're doing a few different Bible stories within, you know, within the theme. But Joseph is going to be kind of an ongoing, we're doing a several part series, I guess you could say, on Joseph. We wanted to create a podcast that we would want to listen to.
SPEAKER_00Exactly.
SPEAKER_01Sunday school workers and Sunday school teachers and leaders. And so that's what this is for. And so I, I like to hear kind of some of the behind the scenes stuff and we want to get into nuts and bolts. So Aaron, right before we came here, you text me, you text me a video and I was literally, I texted literally laughing out loud. It was a, some kind of short on YouTube about podcasts, making fun of podcasts. And they were talking about
SPEAKER_00nothing, nothing for like two
SPEAKER_01minutes. Yeah. So we, We hope that that's not us. That was really funny. But anyway, so we want to provide something that's useful and helpful to other Sunday school teachers and leaders. We kind of have a few bullet points here, but Bible story for the sake of knowing the story. In my mind, I guess kind of where this comes from is there's nothing wrong with this, but often we do a Bible story for the lesson. So maybe I can't remember if there's the different types of preaching formats or
SPEAKER_00whatever. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You know, maybe we're trying to teach a lesson on X.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01So we go find a Bible story for that. That fits that. Right? Mm-hmm. And so, and we do that all the time.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. There's nothing wrong with that. But when we first started like way back, some of the concept was, of course, we didn't focus as much on outreach when we first started. Yeah. I know. It's terrible. But we were focused on discipling. Absolutely. And so the idea kind of, and my kids benefited from this greatly, is the idea was to tell the story, like know the Bible stories. So by the time you get in youth,
SPEAKER_00you know the stories. Well, I can attest to that just with your kids because they'll bring up things that I know as an adult, but it's like, hold on a sec. Yeah, that is in the Bible. That is in there somewhere. And two, on that point too, is not just using it for a concept. lesson but you are getting the word and the Bible says hiding your word in his heart that you might not sin against God that is conceptual but knowing the stories knowing the Bible as a whole just makes our kids especially Sunday school kids that don't know the Bible is huge
SPEAKER_01right well and in the discipling I think when you even as an adult when the preacher is preaching on something and let's say you just read that this week or something you dial in right we just kicked off some Bible quizzing and I was putting some stuff on our website for our Bible quizzing leader, Sister Nicole. There's some statistics in there that she pulled from somewhere, and I don't remember what they are offhand, but it's incredible. It's like, you know, it minimizes the backsliding, and then those that backslide, it's something, I want to say 70%
SPEAKER_00of those that backslide come back. Absolutely. Just because it's in their heart. It's huge.
SPEAKER_01All of that, boy, if we take that law on each bullet point, we're going to be taking forever and our time we're just doing the Bible story for the sake of knowing the story one more little side note on that is I remember a long time ago being down in the in our old fellowship hall we used to double as a school and I remember we were quizzing or I can't remember but we were saying something about like and it was this Bible story in fact and Joseph's name got changed too and one of the Sunday school kids was like Zafnath Phanea we were like what we had done it the week before and we were like wow They remembered that. So that's cool. Those kind of facts are cool. Okay. So the other thing is making it relatable to kids. And this is, I don't know if I said it, but what we wanted to talk about is the full on version, you know, kind
SPEAKER_00of the
SPEAKER_01full blown. And then you can always pare it down, but the full blown version of doing a Bible story.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Use of comedy. So I wrote this down because we have a lot of that in our school. Yes. But it's an attention grabber. It is. It helps get the kids' attention. And I am constantly, and I guess this is kind of a lesson in itself, but I'm constantly gauging the kids. Oh, yeah. And I'll watch. I don't know. A couple weeks ago, Adrian, my son, was back there, and I pointed out to him. I said, look. And it was like we had four actors on stage. Yeah. And I was like, look, the kids are not – Yeah. heard his daughter say something about, we're going to eat your baby. Oh, no. And so he comes in. Where did you learn that? Sunday school? Yeah, he comes in there. Hey, we don't eat. And then he stops. And he said, did you learn that in Sunday school? Brother Baker, game. So now we don't teach kids to eat babies. But that was about the siege of Samaria. Yes. So going back to the
SPEAKER_00comedy deal, you wrote, but be careful. because it's easy to slip into comic routine. So I, I really have to watch myself with this one because I don't consider myself a funny guy. I like cutting up and having fun, but it's very, very easy for me just to go into clown mode. Just a hundred percent. I mean, I remember we were, we were doing the story of, uh, the fiery furnace and I was one of, I was one of the three Hebrews that got thrown in and I can't even tell you the context of why I said it but I said something about this is that was like a Tony Robbins moment and like the only people that got it was I do remember was the adults you're talking about kids walking yeah walking on coals walking on coals and so the adults I watch the adults in the room just lose it and all the kids they didn't get it yeah I was cracking up Adrian
SPEAKER_01he's a teenager he didn't even know what I was talking about
SPEAKER_00so I really have to rein that in because comedy is an easy way to grab their attention Yeah. But you don't want it to come across as, this is going to sound counterintuitive, but childish. Yeah. Bring them to that level.
SPEAKER_01Well, yeah. And I think, and the reason I say be careful is I feel like it's, I think it's okay. It's funny and it's, you know, we all do it and the kids love it. Whenever we have a dunce character, like we have a recurring character, Brennan plays Sam The kids love that Dunst character. They're goofy. They're silly. But I think that it's also an easy crutch if we're not prepared to do it really well. Yeah. It's easy to do everything funny.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I
SPEAKER_01agree. So, like, you know, if we wanted to do some kind of epic scene, okay, I'll just mention one, like Crossing the Red Sea. And we haven't done that as far as epically. I think we've done it with the kids B. the C or something. But as far as like really trying to use special effects, we should do that. That'll be our next podcast. But it's a lot easier to do some kind of comedy routine and not take the time it takes to prepare and order stuff. Absolutely. And then also we do miss opportunity to show how serious something is. So an example is we did years ago and we just not too long ago did a Samson series for our Sunday school, but we usually go for a youth. So we did a Samson Samson play. And, um, but we went all out, like, I don't know about all out, but I mean, we, it was drama. It wasn't a comedy or anything. And so we did, I remember we did the part where, uh, Samson's, um, wife to be, let's see, I'm going to get this biblically accurate. She gets married off to, I guess it's his best man, but not, I think in the terms we think of, but anyway, he gets married off and, um, he gets married. Or she gets married off. He gets mad, lights the foxtails on fire, burns the field. So they answer fire with fire and they burn her up, her and her dad up in the house. Oh, yeah. And so we did that. And I told, it was Sister Autumn. I said, I want you to scream. Blood curdle. Blood curdle, like scream. And she did. And it was impactful. I mean, we had, you know, spotlights and we had like a, we had a strobe light with red cellophane over inside the little rooms that was supposed to be the house. And yeah, she screamed. And then of course, when Samson, I think it was your brother, Brother Joey Bucks. Probably. Yeah. Probably. And so he came, comes running and I told him to be like, drop to his knees and scream and just, you know, it was so good. And so that's drama. And it's so much, it's so easy to fall into a comedy routine on something like that. And you miss, I think you miss like how real that was
SPEAKER_00Oh,
SPEAKER_01yeah. So this is a, you know, we have a pirate ship. We have a cave that's like a playground
SPEAKER_00for
SPEAKER_01our, our biblical stuff. We add some props and my daughter does a lot of that, but it was great. So we add some props to keep, keep it interesting. And one thing that I think is a key that can be helpful is if you throw a, I'll just use a throne. If you have like, we have some gold fabric that we use and just a chair or whatever. But if you create a throne and like, maybe a high back thrown and you have it up when the kids come up. Oh yeah. They're curious. Yep. Like, what is that? What's that for? You know, what's going to happen? And so that, that's just a little element of attention grabbing. And so even if you're in a smaller Sunday school, you know, like a classroom or something, that's, we, we kind of, we do ages five through 11. So we have a bigger classroom, but if you're in a, in separated classrooms, that same concept, you know, even if it's on a table, if you have, you know bring a bicycle and set it up on your table yeah oh yeah and have it as an object lesson or something absolutely it creates that curiosity especially the longer you can draw it out yes act like it's not there yeah and then uh oh i kind of skipped over costumes so yeah costumes is
SPEAKER_00something our staff
SPEAKER_01is really taking that to heart
SPEAKER_00they have and i i haven't myself yet but i know several of them so we're doing pirates they have like man one of our guys brennan that we reference it takes him like 10 minutes to get his outfit on it's got like straps so and leather straps and swords and eye patches. I'm like, hurry
SPEAKER_01up, come on,
SPEAKER_00come on. And then one of our guys, is it Scar? Is John Scar? Is that his name? Is it Captain? Our evil nemesis, First Mate. First Mate Scar. He's got a pirate on his shoulder. Does he have long hair? I
SPEAKER_01think, yeah, he has long hair. And then Steve just got, it's like a George Washington wig. Oh, yeah. He's a captain. Captain Patch. Yeah. Oh, man.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it helps. It really does just go all out with it. because the kids feel like they're in that environment.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, exactly. And they go out and they buy their own, order them off Amazon. I mean, we, every theme we usually will buy stuff, you know, that matches, you know, for costume stuff. And we have that, but yeah, they are, especially the main characters find their costumes, the
SPEAKER_00swords, the pirate pistols. It's, it's
SPEAKER_01amazing. It's super cool. I know the other day I have some of those boots that go to like my knee and I was like, I'll see you guys in an hour. I gotta go take my boots off.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. No
SPEAKER_01quick
SPEAKER_00changes. Boxes of wadded up copy paper. Yep. And that was our weapons. It wasn't going to hurt nobody. And they would just draw a line down the middle of the room and we would, they would go at it and they just went hog wild with it. Yeah. It was battle. Battle time.
SPEAKER_01So we still do the same concept, but now we have, we graduated to Nerf
SPEAKER_00golf balls. Yes.
SPEAKER_01And we have those little plastic ones, like the Playland type. Oh yeah. I think we just got them from Walmart or something. We got a couple of packs of them, but yeah. So action. And that's, that's something too, is interact. We do a lot of interactivity here where the kids get to be a part of the story.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah. We'll need a couple of servants or whatnot. We'll just grab a few kids, bring them to the back, throw an outfit on them, and then they're part of the story.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they get to be like we just did. So we're part of the way into our Joseph Bible story before we started this podcast. So we've already gotten to basically he's in prison now. So we did the coat, the dreams, the pit, and sold a pot of fur, and they Potiphar's wife and so that one we just did a couple weeks ago and we did as far as the action we did the chase
SPEAKER_00yes
SPEAKER_01so and the interactivity we did the slaves sold to Potiphar a few more weeks ago three weeks ago wherever and so we grabbed some kids and they were part of the slaves
SPEAKER_00yeah
SPEAKER_01along with our characters playing Joseph and then yeah so the guards chased them all through the audience and finally you know exit Ad-lib and improv.
SPEAKER_00Oh, boy. That's how we operate. That's our forte right there. Give us bullet points and
SPEAKER_01we are good to go. Yeah. So I write our curriculum and our scripts rarely, I mean very rare, have lines. And so it is bullet points, like you just said. And so we basically, the idea is that we kind of know the Bible story. Sure. And we'll review it. And then it's just ad-lib.
SPEAKER_00That's where that comedy element comes in for me is throwing the extra little things in there that like throwing it. I can't think of one at the moment, but throwing some modern quote in there that the kids would know, but it wasn't a Bible quote, you know what I'm saying? Like some kind of technology or where's my hearing aid, you know, just whatever. And it makes the kids laugh, but it makes, it makes that connection.
SPEAKER_01And it, it's, it's kind of a mini attention grab.
SPEAKER_00It is. Yeah. It grabs them.
SPEAKER_01One of the things for us now we have done it. many times without practice. Sometimes, unfortunately, our practices are just a script run through because I'm so late in getting the script out. It's not like you're not doing anything else. But if we, ideally, I'll put it that way. When we practice, we do, we kind of operate with a what worked, what didn't work idea. And so we'll practice and we usually won't practice everything. Like we don't practice prayer requests. So we'll do some blocking with the Bible story and kind of trying to figure out, okay, where are we going to be? What position? Sure. But then we'll try to, sometimes we'll fast forward to act it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. See if there's any issues with coming and going. We ran into costume changes to where somebody was back to back, two different characters. And if we didn't run through that, we wouldn't have caught it.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. Yep. Yep. And then sometimes like the comedy element, somebody says something, I've had it where somebody says something and it's too off color or it's not like inappropriate, but but it's too off color. I'm like, no,
SPEAKER_00let's not say
SPEAKER_01that. But then there's often somebody will come up with something on the fly in practice.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And, and John's good at that. Yeah. And we're like, Oh yeah, keep that. Use that. That's good. That's good. That's a good idea. And that's the thing about collaboration is huge. Yeah. You come together and you know, we, we usually run about 10 staff. We have a staff of like 30, but we rotate. So we run about 10, 10 staff on our, in Sunday school. And so when we're there, Yeah. All kinds of people would come up with ideas like, well, we could do this. And even logistically.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Like,
SPEAKER_01well, what if you have this person?
SPEAKER_00They're hiding behind the stage.
SPEAKER_01Right. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Already said.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So one thing with Adlib 2 that I found that helps us is we have offering. Trying to think of the things we have. Yeah. Offering every week. Plan of salvation every week.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Pray. Like our different segments. Yes. Praise.
SPEAKER_00And what's nice is we practice a lot of times in precepts. service practice technically we we go through and like the three of us that are doing memory verse we'll figure out okay what are we going to do and it gives us the time to like okay you're going to be the one that's struggling with this subject or concept we're going to help you or this person doesn't want to give their money for offering because they want to go buy video games yeah yeah so that gives us the ability to come up with those ideas then rather than on a flight we've done on the flight many times and it works because we've done it so much but it is nice having something to work off of right you just add a little from there
SPEAKER_01yeah and that's i'm glad you brought that up because often in practice what we'll do because we're we have a 30 minutes 28 yeah for our practice and um and as if not everybody's late yeah so we have we have 30 minutes for our practice and our sunday school runs on average an hour plus maybe a few minutes and so yeah we'll group we do teams of three often and so sometimes there's overlap but we'll like simultaneously practice like hey you three work on offering. You three go to work on the memory verse. Yeah. Yeah. So that's good. Okay. Well, let's just run through kind of, I'm going to read off these bullets, I guess, really quick. And then let's run through a few ideas. And this will be stuff that we'll actually, you know, maybe implement for our Sunday school. Sure. Because we're getting ready to do some of these parts. And then it's just kind of a peek behind the scenes on how we do it. So I have an outline that I created. So this is mostly found in And if somebody wanted to look it up, it's like Genesis 38, nine ish. And then on from there. So we have Joseph's coat of many colors and his dreams. Then Joseph thrown into the pit and sold into slavery. Number three, Joseph sold to Potiphar and falsely accused and thrown into prison. Number four, Joseph put in charge of the prison. And then I actually combined some of the, I had these split out, but last week we didn't get to our Bible story. Yeah. So we have Pharaoh is angry with the butler and baker. Joseph interprets their dreams. And then the butler is restored. The baker is hanged. Sorry, spoiler alert. Like I said, we're at Joseph is in prison.
SPEAKER_00Yes. And we intended to do the dreams, but we didn't. And
SPEAKER_01we didn't. Yeah. And so we have, I think we have 11 weeks left in our theme. We're going to like November 27, I believe. So we have our prison scene coming up. Next week. So let's just talk about that one because we're running out of time. But let's just talk about that one right there.
SPEAKER_00So let's see. Pharaoh's anger with the butler and baker. Joseph interprets the butler and baker's dreams. Butler's story. Baker is hanged. So one thing we were going to do with that going back to the comedy is, in fact, I think I was the baker. And so when Joseph is telling the dreams, he mentions that the butler is going to be restored. So my character is all excited. Yeah. And jumping around and was going to be all happy. And then kind of find out I was going to be hanged. And so the kids automatically are going to think that's hilarious because I'm going to be super sad and I'm going to die. Of course, not that brutal.
SPEAKER_01So you've done this before with various other people. We've done this story and I referenced it in practice, but your story hour for anybody that doesn't know what that is. It's awesome. Look it up for Bible stories. It's super old, but it's good. But they do this skit and it's like, I had a dream. They both say it. Yes. So we've done this. So we try to tell our dream and it's just, it's hilarious. You know, we go, we go through and the Butler Baker. So Joseph finally has to like, okay, hold on one at a time. Yeah. And so one of the things too, that we've done is where, like you said, the Butler is going to be restored and the Baker is supposed to get hang. Well, we, we do like where the Baker is like super optimistic, like, no, no, He's got to be wrong because he's so overjoyed that the butler's getting restored. He's like, nah, that's not going to happen. But yeah, so a few things that we came up with and that we could come up with some more right now. So one thing I was thinking is, I was thinking the Pharaoh is just, he's in a bad mood. Yes. And make it obvious to the kids that it's really not. Like over the top. Yeah. It's really not the butler and the baker's fault. He's just in a bad mood. He's just in a bad mood. I was thinking like the butler who's like, The cup bearer. Right. We call him the butler. But the cup bearer comes and gives the king, the pharaoh, something to drink. And he like spits it out. Like, what is this nasty stuff? And then he doesn't get rid of the butler right away because he's like just, then just like on the heels of that, here comes the baker.
SPEAKER_00Tumbling. Tumbling trip. I think, I think it would be cool if you fell on his lap. I was going to. Yeah. I was going to fall on his lap and then wind up maybe not sitting on his lap, but very close to it. Yeah. Because Brother Ardor is such a big guy. Yeah. It'd be great. Yeah. So, yeah. You called
SPEAKER_01Pharaoh? You could sit on his lap. And maybe what you could do is have some bread or something in your hand. And I'm eating it.
SPEAKER_00And you're eating
SPEAKER_01it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Munching on it. Here, want
SPEAKER_01some? Yes. Okay. So we'll do that. And then so then he's, of course, at that point, furious. Maybe he stands up. You fall over. And then the butler, maybe you fall into him and trip him
SPEAKER_00up. Spill the drink.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So it just kind of puts you guys both in the same category as Pharaoh's mind. And he's like, guards. And so the guards come in and I don't know, we could probably do a little chase sequence there.
SPEAKER_00Run through the kids. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And the other thing that it would be funny is the guards could come in and grab some of the kids, the wrong people. Oh yeah. Yeah. You know, like Pharaoh, maybe guards get, you know. Seize them and we're in the middle of the crowd. Yeah. Yeah. There you go. Yeah. Maybe hiding in the midst of the crowd. Chase sequence slash they grab the kids. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. You got to know which kids get scared.
SPEAKER_01and then they get hauled out and then of course there's some logistics we do scene change so usually what will happen is we have a costume room that's behind our audience so they'll go out they'll exit taking them to prison but they're traveling there and then scene change in comes joseph and the jailer and i think oh what we were planning to do is start the scene with joseph and the jailer yeah because the The jailer was putting Joseph in charge. He was giving him the tour. Giving him the tour. That's right. So they come in, wrapping up the tour, and then the guards bring in Butler and Baker. Okay. So then they have to dream. Yes.
SPEAKER_00Okay. So we should. Another comedy
SPEAKER_01moment. Yeah. This could be comedy. There's a lot of comedy. I think that this is warranted here. More than most. Yeah. Because it's not. I suppose if someone wanted to be really serious, there could be something that would be like, well, you should have pointed this out. But we're going to stick with this for a little bit. So, in the dreaming, we should add something to that. So, what could we do? So, one thing is, like, we have the stage. And so, we try to get it as high as possible because the kids can see. But we do have the upper deck
SPEAKER_00for our pirate ship. So, you know, okay. Wheels are turning here. This is what we do, folks. We have the stairs that go up to the – what's that called? The top of the – Well, I think it's poop deck. Yeah. I was just wanting you to say it on a podcast. Thank you. I knew that, but I wanted to hear you. So my character automatically, I would want to sleepwalk.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yes.
SPEAKER_00I would want to sleepwalk having this nightmare and I'm like walking up the stairs backwards and almost fall a few times and the kids,
SPEAKER_01ah, he's going to fall
SPEAKER_00and wind up up top somehow and then wake up while I'm up top. Oh, okay. Oh, so you don't start up there. Yeah, I start downstairs, walk up and then wake up up top. Can you imagine how terrifying that would be to wake up like where you were not sleeping?
SPEAKER_01And then you could have the conversation back and forth with the baker before Joseph comes in. where he's sitting on the floor. What are you
SPEAKER_00doing up there? I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. And so, and your dream is the baskets on your head and the birds picking out of the top one. So maybe you'd be like, I'm looking for a bird. Yeah. Where's the birds? You know what? The parrot is sitting up there right now. Oh, it is. It's on the rail. There it is. From the pirate theme. Yeah. There it is. Oh, this is going off the rails. Okay. So the, And then the butler, he's sleeping down on the bottom. Yeah. And so then Joseph comes in and he's like, hey, what's wrong? Maybe instead of you guys having the long face or whatever, maybe instead you guys could start arguing, the butler and baker. Yeah. Maybe because you're trying to talk over each other about your dreams or like, no, my dream.
SPEAKER_00Mine was scarier than yours or something.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. There you go, yeah. Like, I had three vines. Yeah, well, I had three baskets. Yeah. And then Joseph was like, hey, hey, hey, calm down, calm down. What's going on? And then go into the dream. I had a dream. Yeah, I had a dream. So then maybe, you know, not that we couldn't still have some funny parts, but maybe he brings it home. Yes. And so when he interprets the dreams, he's like, Joseph's not doing comedy. Right. He's like bringing it home. Like, this is what's happening three days or three you know vines means three days and you know pharaoh this so maybe maybe we can do that and then i think we should make a big deal out of when he asks the butler He says, you're going to be restored.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And then, hey, when you are restored, because he knows this is going to happen. He
SPEAKER_00knows it's going to
SPEAKER_01happen. Remember me. I'm stuck here in this prison. Remember me. So maybe we could kind of all the comedy and then bring it home of where they are. They're in this dirty prison with rats. And even though Joseph's in charge, he's in there falsely accused and he's in prison. So maybe that's how we can kind of bring it home. Yeah. And then, okay, really quick before we go on, let's think of stage prop. and props we kind of costumes just to address that you know I got to remember that we're used to kind of do we do what we do but I want to share this so we we have the luxury we're blessed that we have a costume room and we have you know costumes hanged up and and
SPEAKER_00organized organized
SPEAKER_01my daughter runs that and everything but I know that there's smaller situations yeah and and even where you can't do this full-on skit and so we I've used kids. Sometimes I've used kids on stage for a smaller version. But again, today, all of this can be pared down, but today we're talking about kind of the full on thing. And so costumes, we do a lot of, for biblical stuff, we do a lot of robes and like kind of almost just a simple shawl that you throw
SPEAKER_00on over your head. Mom, I'm sure, has made most of those, right? Yeah, we've
SPEAKER_01homemade several of those. And then we bought like brown robes cheap, you know, for like a Halloween time. Yeah, yeah. Halloween's a good time for costumes. Yeah. And it's coming up. We have all kinds of like little strips of cloth for belts. Yes. So it kind of makes it look a little better. Yeah. It's a sheet.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And so then props. Chains. We have chains. That's a good idea. Yeah, we should have chains where they go in and get thrown on. And then somehow the baker mysteriously so he gets this from his jeans as he's sleepwalking. Yeah, as he's sleepwalking, yeah. And then a couple other things is we have in the past, right now we don't have our lighting set up. We have in the past used lighting, and that can be actually really dramatic. Dim the lights. Yeah, and then have the stage lighting. So we will hopefully get that set up soon. But we do music, tracks, and sound effects.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01And that's
SPEAKER_00a huge part. That is huge. That adds so much, I say emotion, but it does. Like when they're in the, we're in the prison, I don't know what sounds we were going to use, but you could just imagine like a dripping sound in the background and some synth with some spooky chords. It just adds to the ambience.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, exactly. Yeah. So we use those tracks a bunch. If you stuck with us this long, hopefully we weren't too boring or too off the rails and hopefully someone made sense. And I hope it helped. Yes. That's, that's the ultimate goal. That's the ultimate goal. That's the key. Yeah. We're not professionals or experts.
SPEAKER_00No, we started this how many years ago? Doing what we do now. Boy. That's before I was married. Yeah. That's been a long time, right? Started in our fellowship hall with a couple army coats.
SPEAKER_0120 years, something like that. Yeah. That's been a long time. Yep. Been a long time. So we've made many, many, many mistakes. And we're going to try to air those on here to get them out of our system. Oh, man. Help some other people maybe avoid some of those. Yeah. So... All right. Well, I think that's it. That's a wrap.
